The plot of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is centered around the main ape, Noa, who is searching for his family and friends of The Eagle Clan after they’ve been kidnapped by a rogue group of violent insurgent apes that have twisted the words of Caesar to serve their own interests. On his journey, he meets a human woman called Mae, and they work together but are eventually captured by the army of Proximus Caesar. During their capture, Noa and Mae realize that Proximus Caesar is gathering clans and troops of apes to open the door to an underground vault.
This particular vault is a bunker that the US military and government went inside as The Simian Flu began to spread around the globe after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Mae and Noa hatch a plan to get inside, and open the door and ruin the contents with the tide of the ocean. As they enter the bunker, Mae’s intentions become clearer as she walks away from Noa and his friends and retrieves a SatCom key from a server.
How does Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes end?
Noa is nearly killed by Proximus’ second in command, but eventually, he and his companions make it out of the vault through the rear entrance. Proximus also makes it out of the vault, and begins brutally beating Noa for destroying his grand kingdom. Noa finds hope when he sees the eagles of his clan circling above, and summons the eagles from above by singing his father’s song, and when his clan members join him in the chanting, the eagles begin attacking Proximus, eventually sending the king to his death.
Noa becomes the leader of The Eagle Clan, with his journey inspiring him to realize that the world is much bigger than he originally thought. It illuminates his ideas about fellow apes that live all around the world.
After Mae secures the SatCom Key from the vault, she rides across the countryside and arrives at a different bunker. A woman in a hazmat suit takes the SatCom Key from her, and she returns to the underground where an array of humans is hard at work trying to re-establish man’s world and make contact with other settlements. With the use of the SatCom Key, they’re able to decrypt the satellites outside the bunker, and they use it to get in contact with fellow humans.
Mae makes it clear to Noa that humans deserve their planet back, and their final scene is full of tension, with neither of them sure if Caesar’s wish that man and ape could live alongside each other would be achievable. Noa states this, but Mae is holding a pistol behind her back as she doesn’t trust that things could become confrontational.
Does Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes have a post-credits scene?
The recent Planet of the Apes series hasn’t been known for post or mid-credits scenes, with only Rise of the Planet of the Apes having a proper mid-credits scene. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes featured an audio cue as a tease for fans which hinted at Koba surviving his fall, (but that ended up being a dead end as it wasn’t followed up).
War for the Planet of the Apes featured nothing at all as the credits rolled, with Caesar’s journey coming to an end. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes does not have a post-credit or even a mid-credit sequence as a tease for future installments.
However, just like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes before it, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes does have a minor audio cue at the very end of the credits. A brief ape call can be heard, which appears to be the same one made by Raca in the movie. This could point towards Raca surviving the events of the movie, or it could just be a little treat for audiences who chose to wait until the very end of the feature.
