Demon Slayer: 6 Demon Slayer Traditions

Highlights

  • Demon Slayers must survive the Final Selection test to become members and wield a Nichirin Sword crafted with special ore.
  • The Demon Slayer Mark increases abilities but comes with a curse, while Kasugai Crows aid in communication and mission guidance.
  • Demon Slayers aim to climb ranks, with Hashira being the top tier who must kill many demons or take out a Twelve Moon Demon.

The Demon Slayer Corps was formed in the early days to stop the reign of terror by Kibutsuji Muzan and his demons. Led by the Ubuyashiki family and the great Yoriichi Tsugukuni, they established themselves as humanity’s last line of defense against the demons, and they have carried on with it till this day and are now known as a great organization with rich history and tradition.

There are several aspects of being a Demon Slayer that are passed down through generations to prepare them for the grueling life ahead in hopes that one day the demons will be vanquished, and here are a few of them.

6 The Demon Slayer Final Selection

The Ultimate Test

To become a member of the Demon Slayer Corps, one must partake in the Final Selection exercise that is used to weed out the weak, because the life of a Demon Slayer is always at risk, and none of them are expected to live really long lives. The top of Mount Fujikasane is used as the venue because of the wisteria flowers that bloom along its foot and sides, which helps to lock in the weak demons kept there for the examination.

The candidates are to spend a week in the test location and survive the grueling test, which is famous for having a very low survival rate. While the stakes might be a little too high for a test organization, as you can either pass or die, it is necessary to prepare prospective Demon Slayers for the arduous life that lies in front of them.

5 Acquiring a Nichirin Sword

The Soul Of A Demon Slayer

Following their success in the Final Selection Examination, the newly inducted Demon Slayers are asked to select their choice of ore, which will be used to craft their Nichirin Sword. This will be used by the special swordsmiths in the highly secretive Swordsmith Village and eventually delivered to them after two weeks.

These have existed for as long as demon slayers, as they are the only weapons besides sunlight that a human can use to eliminate a demon. The scarlet ore and scarlet crimson iron sand, which are the primary materials, absorb sunlight all year round at the peak of Mount Yoko. After being wielded by the Demon Slayer for the first time, the sword changes color based on the breathing style of the wielder, and in very unique cases, it becomes black, like in the case of Tanjiro.

4 The Demon Slayer Mark

The Mark Of One Who Put His Life On The Line To Destroy Demons

The Demon Slayer Mark is a special mark that Demon Slayers can uncover in extremely special circumstances. The premier demon slayer, Yoriichi Tsugukuni, is the origin of this mark, as he was the only one born with it. The mark differs from person to person by the breathing style they use, with the exception of Tanjiro and the Tsugukuni brothers, who manifest it in the form of flames.

It can only be unlocked by encountering someone who has previously manifested the mark and having a near-death encounter. This mark greatly increases the physical ability and state of the Demon Slayer and grants them special abilities, but whoever manifests it is cursed to die before turning twenty-five, except Yoriichi, who lived till the age of eighty.

3 The Use of Kasugai Crow for Communication

Information Is Power

Kasugai Crows are also given to the newly inducted Demon Slayers after passing the Final Selection exams, and their primary purpose is to facilitate communication between the Demon Slayers.

They are used to deliver mission instructions from Ubuyashiki to the Demon Slayers, and they are also used to guide people to and from the Swordsmith Village to avoid the location being discovered. They are a very important part of the work Demon Slayers do, as information is power, and in a world with limited means of communication, they are irreplaceable.

2 The Demon Slayer Ranks

The Best Of The Best

From the point of acceptance into the Demon Slayer Corps, the members are introduced to a ranking system that starts out at Mizunoto and ends at Kinoe, with eight other ranks in between them. Kinoe is said to be the highest rank an average Demon Slayer should aim for, but there is a higher rank that is second only to Ubuyashiki in the corps’ hierarchy.

To become a Hashira, a Demon Slayer must either kill fifty demons or take out one of the Twelve Moon Demons, which is a near impossible task. The Hashira are the pinnacle of demon slayers and have “Destroyer of Demons” engraved on their swords. A Hashira can also select a Demon Slayer to succeed him in the event that they die in battle or retire, and those are called Tsuguko.

1 Invention of Breathing Styles

Unique Problems Require Unique Solutions

In order to keep up with demons and their insane physical abilities, Yoriichi Tsugukuni invented sword styles that make use of total concentration breathing to increase the physical and mental abilities of demon slayers. By increasing their lung capacity and blood flow, they are able to keep up with the demons and eliminate them.

Yoriichi invented sun breathing, and the other first-generation Demon Slayers derived several other breathing styles from this under his tutelage. These Breathing Styles were obtained by mimicking nature and some of its elements, replicating them with movements, sword stances, and attack patterns, greatly increasing their efficiency.
