In the entire Shonen genre, Jujutsu Kaisen is famous for having some of the most powerful and complicated techniques. These techniques are an extension of the character that uses them and perfectly complement their style of fighting and personality. They can range from merely being healing abilities to moves that can cut through the fabric of reality itself.
However, despite many of these abilities being powerful enough to rank their corresponding characters as some of the strongest characters in all of anime, some Cursed Techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen are quite the opposite. For some, however, the techniques themselves are weak but the characters who they belong to are masters at using them, while others are just weak no matter how they’re used.
Nobara’s Straw Doll Technique Has Its Limits
Nobara is not a weak character as she has shown herself to be fairly adept in several combat situations that she took part in. However, the limited nature of her Cursed Technique, the Straw Doll Technique, makes her fighting style fairly restricted. Even though her usage of Resonance allows her to be a hard counter to the soul-centered moveset of the Special Grade Curse, Mahito, she still gets overpowered by him.
The Straw Doll Technique allows her to shoot nails with her cursed energy-imbued hammer into a curse. Once struck, Nobara can then use a straw doll to inflict great damage onto the curse by hitting the doll directly, which then transfers the damage onto the curse itself, much like a voodoo doll. The Straw Doll Technique is very effective against lower-leveled Cursed Spirits but doesn’t have the same power against stronger curses. The only reason that it worked so well against Mahito is because she just happened to be a hard counter against him.
Yuji’s Divergent Fist Is Too Simple to Standout
When Yuji first unveiled his technique early on in Jujutsu Kaisen, many fans were left a little disappointed in the simplicity of it. In a series filled with super powerful and overly complicated techniques, many were left scratching their heads as to why the main character would get a technique that relies on simply punching his opponents instead of doing something unique and cool like what other characters can do.
Divergent Fist is essentially just a cursed energy-imbued punch that attacks twice and does double damage to Yuji’s opponents. While effective, Todo remarked that it alone wouldn’t be effective enough against anything over the Grade 1 Cursed Spirit level, causing Yuji to expand his moveset and become more adept with the Black Flash, which allows him to contend with Special Grades. Currently, in the manga, Yuji has yet another new Cursed Technique that has very little revealed about it so far but lets him fight against Sukuna.
Haruta Relies Too Much on Miracles
Haruta Shigemo is one of the most hated characters in all of Jujutsu Kaisen and is one that is very weak in general. This is an aspect of his character that he even admits to in the Shibuya Incident and that he likes to kill and prey on the weak. This is mostly because he cannot face anyone strong himself, as was most easily seen in his fight against Nanami, where he was utterly embarrassed by the Grade 1 sorcerer.
Haruta’s Cursed Technique, Miracles, stores very minor miracles that he comes across during the day in the marks under his eyes that protect him from danger. This can be something as small as seeing 11:11 pm on the clock. Though it may seem strong, the true reason for its weakness is that Haruta does not know anything about his technique but is still very reliant on it, so he would never know when his miracles have been used up, leading to great trouble for him.
Iori’s Explosive Flesh is Only Good in Certain Situations
Iori Hazenoki was a resurrected sorcerer in the Culling Game that was actually fairly strong and was quite a hurdle for Megumi and Takaba to overcome. Though his strength and overall cursed energy were quite formidable, his actual Cursed Technique was very situational and weak depending on who he fought, as was best seen in his fight against Kenjaku.
With Explosive Flesh, Hazenoki tears off and throws a body part towards his enemy which was imbued with his cursed energy and technique. When the projectile reaches its intended target, Hazenoki remotely detonates it with a massive explosion, then healing that part of his body using Reverse Cursed Technique. Though the move is powerful, its requirements are counter-intuitive and very situational, only being properly effective against lower-level opponents.
Momo’s Tool Manipulation Is More Focused on Surveillance
Momo Nishimiya has an ability called Tool Manipulation that she uses very frequently. The Cursed Technique is very weak, though it does not even prioritize combat encounters in the first place. As seen in the Goodwill Event, she mostly flies far above the battlefield and acts as surveillance and the eyes for the sorcerers on the ground.
Her technique allows her to use her broomstick to fly, though she can even use it independently without herself on it with a telekinetic connection. The main usage of her technique is on her broom as a means of letting her fly, while also being able to conjure powerful gusts of wind to be used as a projectile in combat, as she does at the end of the Shibuya Incident towards Kenjaku and Uraume.
Mai’s Construction Suffers From Her Low Cursed Energy
Mai is widely regarded as one of the weakest characters in the entirety of Jujutsu Kaisen, though it isn’t even her fault. Being born a twin, Mai had very little cursed energy since birth, due to the laws of Jujutsu treating twins as separate entities of the same being. Her low cursed energy led to her innate technique, Construction, not being able to perform at its maximum output, and being very weak.
Construction itself is actually an incredibly powerful technique. The ancient sorcerer, Yurozu, had access to the same technique, but due to her far greater amounts of cursed energy, she was able to use the technique at its maximum potential, where it was used to put up a decent fight against Sukuna. The technique allows the user to use their cursed energy to form physical objects and use them for defensive or offensive purposes.
Mai’s cursed energy output was very low, which meant that she could not use Construction well enough. It was so low that she could only really manage to form a single bullet a day that she would fire from her handgun, making Mai Zenin the sorcerer with the worst Cursed Technique in all of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
