Ryomen Sukuna is the King of Curses and unequivocally the strongest character in all of Jujutsu Kaisen. In the various fights that he has had in the series, he has masterfully used his Cursed Technique, known as ‘Dismantle and Cleave’, wherein Sukuna sends out invisible and massively powerful slashes of cursed energy to cut his opponents. There are 2 types of slashes included in this technique, with Dismantle being a simple and ubiquitous cut and Cleave being a lattice-shaped series of successive cuts.
However, Jujutsu Kaisen has teased various times that this is not all that Sukuna can do. Throughout the series, is shown as a master at understanding the very fundamentals of Jujutsu sorcery, something that is reflected in how Sukuna can use many different tools and techniques that fans have never even seen before. So, let’s take a look at what some of these are.
Sukuna’s Incredible Physical Prowess
While this may seem like something that is almost synonymous with all Jujutsu sorcerers, there are only a handful of other characters that are as adept at simple hand-to-hand fighting as Sukuna. Jujutsu can be used to further bolster this physical prowess and strengthen the body but the level of advantage received from cursed energy is also dependent on the reserves that the character has. In Sukuna’s case, his cursed energy is almost infinite.
Other sorcerers such as Gojo, Yuji and Hakari may have some feats of physical strength that are greater than what Sukuna has shown to exhibit but that doesn’t mean that Sukuna would lose to them in a fistfight. He has been shown to be incredibly acrobatic and fast when dealing strikes as was seen in first episode of Jujutsu Kaisen where, despite being only powered by very few fingers, he was able to outclass Megumi.
His physical prowess was also on full display against both Jogo and Mahoraga. Against Jogo, he forced the Special Grade Cursed Spirit to go all out in using all his strength to defeat the King of Curses, while Sukuna himself was only powered by 15 fingers. For most of the fight, Sukuna was using only his physical prowess, utilizing his Cursed Technique sparingly. However, this was largely the opposite against Mahoraga where his usage of Dismantle and Cleave was abundant along with his physical attacks, putting Sukuna as one of the strongest physical combatants in the series.
The Impact of Sukuna’s Cursed Tools in Battle
Some parts of Sukuna’s arsenal that have been shown very little to fans are his cursed tools, Kamutoke and Hiten. Ever since the first look at his true Heian-Era form, fans have been speculating about the tools that Sukuna had once used, seeing one that looked like a trident and another that seemed like a Vajra. It wasn’t until Chapter 237 of the manga that fans would get a little bit of news about what one of these tools could do.
Kamutoke is shaped like a Vajra, which itself is a traditional and ritualistic weapon based in Hindu mythology. And, just like in Hindu mythology, the Kamutoke is a weapon that is capable of summoning massive amounts of lightning from within itself to be thrown at a specific enemy. It is slightly different in the sense that there is an extra blade coming out of one of the ends of the weapon, and the only time this weapon was used was against Kashimo.
The sheer amount of lightning that was summoned by Kamutoke was unprecedented, as such incredible power output had never been seen before from any other Cursed Tool. However, since Kashimo’s entire power system revolved around electricity and lightning, he suffered no damage from it. Sukuna’s other cursed tool, Hiten, is a trident that has never been seen in the modern day, so its whereabouts are unknown.
Sukuna’s True Power is Still a Mystery to Fans
Desite being Sukuna’s most destructive hidden ability, this ability is still largely shrouded in mystery. This is because fans still don’t have a true grasp on how it works, or even what it is. First seen in Sukuna’s fight against Jogo, the King of Curses dodged all of Jogo’s attacks, only to meet him on top of his Maximum: Meteor at the conclusion of the fight. After speaking to him, Sukuna stated that it was time to fight Jogo using his own specialty.
In the manga, the panel simply shows a black box followed by the word ‘open’ whereas in the anime, Sukuna is shown saying something, but the sound is cut, followed by the word open. The scene is then followed by Sukuna with his own fire that rests in his palm, fire that seems to be even brighter and more fluid than even Jogo’s, which Sukuna then shapes into an arrow. After firing this arrow, he burns away a character based entirely around fire.
The second time this ability is used is in Sukuna’s very next fight, where he faces off against Mahoraga. This battle is absolutely incredible and destructive, where Sukuna’s Dismantle and Cleave Cursed Technique continuously slice open entire buildings and parts of the city while Mahoraga destroys the land with his brute strength and adaptation.
Towards the end, however, Sukuna opens his Domain Expansion to cut Mahoraga so quickly that the Shikigami simply can’t adapt fast enough. However, this fails as Mahoraga is seen walking through the damage, causing Sukuna to use his flame arrow once more and leading to a massive explosion that obliterates that entire part of Shibuya. Fans still do not know what this attack is, as some speculate that it is just a very powerful flame attack, whereas others debate that it is an ability that Sukuna can use to copy and utilize his opponent’s technique but with much more efficiency and power.
Whatever the case may be, Sukuna’s arsenal is vast and incredibly dangerous, truly making him an extremely powerful and feared foe that the heroes will have a lot of trouble in taking down. Aside from these abilities, Sukuna has further amplified his Dismantle Cursed Technique so that it can cut space itself, so the heroes are in for the fight of their lives.
Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
