One of the most crucial parts of the fascinating ritual to bring back the dead sorcerer of the past into this modern era is consent. With that in mind, here are the main reasons why they gave their consent to somebody as sinister and deceitful as Kenjaku:
- Hungry for more battle. Some sorcerers dedicated their whole lives to battle. Unfortunately, even the most ruthless sorcerers couldn’t escape death. To satisfy their thirst for battle beyond their life, they struck a deal with Kenjaku. Example: Hajime Kashimo and Ryu Ishigori.
- To get another chance in life. Some sorcerers were forced to live a life in servitude, but what they got in the end was nothing more than regrets and disappointment. So before they met their death, they agreed to be revived by Kenjaku in order to get a second chance in the future. Example: Angel and Takako Uro.

The Culling Game introduced quite a few powerful reincarnated sorcerers. Out of all of them, here are some of the most notable ones:
- Hajime Kashimo.Known as the God of Lightning, Hajime Kashimo agreed to be reincarnated because he wanted to defeat the one enemy that he could never beat during his lifetime, the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna.
- Ryu Ishigori. Ryu Ishigori fought quite a few strong sorcerers and cursed spirits during his lifetime, but none of them managed to satisfy him. He agreed to be reincarnated in the hope of finding an opponent who could push him to his absolute limit.
- Angel. Angel was part of the Abe Clan’s elite squad known as the Desshi Pacification Squad. They suffered a major defeat at the hands of Sukuna. She agreed to be reincarnated because she wanted to kill Sukuna once and for all.
- Takako Uro. Takako Uro was the captain of an elite assassination squad known as the Sun, Moon, and Stars Squad. She was betrayed by her own master, which led to her death. She agreed to be reincarnated because she wanted to be free.
- Yorozu. Yorozu was an infamous sorcerer from Aizu who was notorious for defeating the Five Empty Generals of the famed Fujiwara Clan. Unlike the other sorcerers in this list, she agreed to be reincarnated because she wanted to rejoin the love of her life, Sukuna.
How Kenjaku Reawakened the Dead Sorcerers
Although reviving people who’ve been dead for hundreds, some even thousands, of years ago seems like a complicated and otherworldly task, it’s actually quite straightforward. Here are the steps that Kenjaku has taken to complete the reincarnation ritual.
A Verbal Consent
As mentioned earlier, one of the most important requirements of the reincarnation ritual is consent. Kenjaku can only revive jujutsu sorcerers who have explicitly agreed to be reincarnated. To this end, he spent thousands of years roaming around Japan to convince countless powerful sorcerers to join his sinister ritual, but only a handful of them agreed to his proposal. If not for this limitation, Kenjaku would’ve surely brought back hundreds, if not thousands, of past sorcerers to participate in his Culling Game.
Turning Into Cursed Objects Upon Death
After he receives their verbal consent, the next step is to wait for the sorcerer to die. Whether they died from natural causes or fell on a battlefield, the next step of the ritual remains the same. Kenjaku will turn the corpse of the sorcerer into a cursed object, just like how he turned Sukuna’s soul into a special-grade cursed object in the form of twenty fingers. Unfortunately, there’s no information regarding the exact method of how Kenjaku turns a sorcerer into a cursed object.
“The cursed objects that I provided are what’s left of the sorcerers with whom I painstakingly made vows a millennium ago”
– Kenjaku, Chapter 136
A Suitable Vessel
A couple of years before the intended incarnation ritual, Kenjaku begins to travel the country to look for a suitable vessel for the past sorcerer’s soul. Once he finds a suitable vessel, he puts a curse on them that will immediately put them in a state of coma. After that, he will make them swallow the suitable cursed object, which is the embodiment of the past sorcerer’s soul. These innocent people will stay in this vegetative state until Kenjaku begins the Reawakening ritual.
Reawakening
In the middle of his battle with Yuji Itadori, Yuki Tsukumo, and Choso, Kenjaku casts a spell that triggers the curse that he has placed on numerous innocent people throughout the country. Once this curse is activated, the soul of the past sorcerer immediately takes over the body and suppresses the soul of the original body. They gain knowledge and information regarding the modern era through the vessel’s memories while maintaining their original cursed energy and innate techniques. At this point, the reincarnation ritual is complete.

In order to gather enough Cursed Energy through the Culling Game, Kenjaku needs a bloodbath, especially between individuals with high levels of cursed energy. Unfortunately, there are not enough jujutsu sorcerers and cursed spirits in this modern era. So to spice things up and fasten the process, Kenjaku decided to awaken normal people who have the potential to wield Cursed Energy, such as Hiromi Higuruma, and revive the powerful sorcerers of the past.

As the story gets closer to the end of the Culling Game, the roles of the remaining reincarnated begin to shift. Rather than fighting among themselves and taking out other Culling Game players, they are now working together with Yuji and his friends in their attempt to defeat Sukuna.
The two reincarnated sorcerers who have joined forces with Yuji’s side are Angel and Hajime Kashimo. Hajime wants to prove that he is better than Sukuna, while Angel’s main mission has always been to kill Sukuna. Since both parties happen to have the same objective, they decided to diverge from their original role as Kenjaku’s pawns and focus on finding ways to defeat the King of Curses instead.
