Jujutsu Kaisen: How Sukuna’s Divine Flames Work, Explained

Highlights

  • Sukuna’s Divine Flames are his strongest technique, requiring Cleave and Dismantle to access.
  • The flames erase all life within a domain, but can be countered.
  • Sukuna didn’t use Divine Flames against Gojo due to battle complexity.

Jujutsu Kaisen is currently in the final phase of the Shinjuku showdown arc, where the battle between Sukuna and the sorcerers is currently taking place. Of course, fans know that this battle is now starting to wrap up, and this couldn’t have been more evident than in JJK chapter 259, where Sukuna utilized his ultimate technique, Divine Flames, managing to cause quite a lot of damage and even a major death.

One of the most exciting parts of JJK chapter 259 was Sukuna’s usage of his ultimate technique, the Divine Flames or Furnace. This is an incredibly powerful ability that Sukuna has relied on for the third time in the story now, and while fans did not understand much about it up until this point in JJK, now, the author has gone on to explain how exactly it works, what it does and why exactly he used it right now.

Sukuna Unleashes Divine Flames

Sukuna Made Use Of Divine Flames To Get Rid Of The Sorcerers

In the previous chapter of JJK, fans got to see Sukuna create a domain with a change in the palm signs, and utilizing a different part of his brain which was unaffected by Unlimited Void to cast Malevolent Shrine. Of course, this high-level domain was not going to last for long, and fans were made aware of the fact that he only had 99 seconds to clear out all the sorcerers. Thankfully, they all utilized the power of a simple domain to protect themselves from Sukuna’s technique and while Yuji’s domain ended up breaking, he was still able to withstand this powerful blow. However, Sukuna wasn’t done. In fact, he opened his ultimate technique immediately after and utilized the power of his fire arrow.

But, since things are starting to get interesting, how about I start fighting using your specialty?

Fans have seen this fire arrow before in Shibuya as well on two occasions. The first time he used it was against Jogo and he was able to completely incinerate him to a crisp. Later on, Sukuna came face-to-face with Mahoraga, and once again, he utilized this power to burn the divine General to a crisp, defeating him in the process.

In JJK chapter 258, Sukuna brought out the Divine Flames once again and this time around, they were targeted at the Sorcerers around him. However, utilizing these Divine Flames was not as easy for Sukuna as one would have thought. In fact, there was a very valid reason as to why Sukuna could not use these Flames earlier.

In JJK chapter 259, it was confirmed that in order for Sukuna to access the Divine Flames, he has to first utilize the power of Cleave and Dismantle. Once he does that, only then can he access the Divine Flames and start the process of cooking. This makes quite a lot of sense, given that we previously highlighted the fact that Sukuna’s domain is truly a Malevolent Kitchen, where he is the chef and he chops things up and cooks with his fire. It was confirmed in JJK chapter 259 that Sukuna’s Divine Flames are his ultimate technique and the strongest one that he has in his arsenal.

Naturally, fans would wonder as to why Sukuna did not use this technique against Gojo. Many fans argued that Sukuna was actually holding back against Gojo and that if he had unleashed his flame arrow from the get-go, he could have defeated Gojo easily. This claim was refuted by the author in JJK chapter 259. Essentially, because the battle against Gojo was such a high-level one, Sukuna had to keep changing the rules of his domain, and make Binding Vows to alter the range of his attacks. Because of that, it was not possible to utilize the power of the Divine Flames against him. As such, it has now been confirmed that Sukuna would never have been able to utilize Divine Flames against Gojo, and that his Infinity would have stood against this ultimate attack of the King of Curses.

The Power Of Sukuna’s Divine Flames

Sukuna’s Divine Flames Is His Ultimate Technique

Sukuna’s Divine Flames is the strongest power that he has up his sleeve. However, the way they work is rather complicated. Sukuna cannot access his Divine Flames right from the get-go. He needs to go through the doors of Cleave and Dismantle to be able to access the flames of cooking. Only after he does that can he gain access to this power. Sukuna’s Divine Flames also lack speed and at the same time, they have a very narrow range. As such, they are not ideal to utilize against individuals who can escape its range. Naturally, this wouldn’t have worked against the sorcerers. Because of that, Sukuna had to make a Binding Vow which meant that he could only target multiple people inside of his domain, and that outside, it was limited to one individual. Inside the domain, he could incinerate just about everything in the surroundings.

That is precisely what happened in this chapter, much to the frustration of many fans. It seems that every time Sukuna finds himself in a corner, the author gives him a Binding Vow to get around it in what doesn’t even appear to be a fair exchange. Regardless, that is exactly what happened in this chapter, and it is because of this powerful technique that Choso ended up dying after protecting Yuji.

The heat of the furnace spread the detonations immediately, birthing scalding, instantly compressing and decompressing shockwaves, ensuring the death of all living beings within the domain.

The narrator continued to explain that Sukuna’s flames work in a very curious manner. They don’t simply incinerate the target. They lead to compression and decompression, and cook individuals inside with immense pressure, which eventually leads to the death of all forms of life in the domain. Essentially, it wipes out all life, which makes it Sukuna’s ultimate technique.

How Strong Are The Divine Flames?

The Divine Flames Is One Of JJK’s Strongest Techniques

It is safe to say that Sukuna’s Divine Flames are truly overpowered. Nearly all individuals inside his domain likely die when he utilizes this technique. However, that is not to say that this technique cannot be countered. Sukuna’s Divine Flames were in fact countered by Choso in this chapter, even though it was unleashed at its full power. Choso used a blood domain to coat Yuji’s body with it and Yuji successfully survived without even a single burn on his body. Of course, Choso ended up dying himself, and this is likely due to the fact that he used his remaining powers to protect Yuji.

The fact is, the Divine Flames, despite being very powerful, can be countered. At the same time, fans should also keep in mind that individuals such as Gojo could easily counter a technique like this, which is another reason why Sukuna never utilized it in the battle against him.

That said, the majority of the world of JJK would fall to the power of the Divine Flames, as they erase all forms of life altogether. Had Todo not moved the sorcerers outside Sukuna’s domain, they would most certainly have died right there and then, which just goes to show that this technique is worthy of all the praise.

Jujutsu Kaisen is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of JJK, Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 259, is set to be May 12, 2024.
