Gojo is, undoubtedly, one of the most iconic characters in Jujutsu Kaisen that the fans have seen over the years. In fact, it wouldn’t even be a stretch to say that Gojo is the most popular character in this franchise and his popularity has only skyrocketed over the years.

Gojo is exceptionally powerful, however, more than that, he is a beloved character who cares deeply about his students and wants to see them do well in life. Gojo is a multifaceted character the depth of which can often be overlooked due to his impeccable strength. Throughout his life, he remained to be a role model for many, and now that he is dead, he has left behind an unforgettable legacy in his story.

Gojo’s Important Role In JJK

Gojo Played The Role Of The Strongest And The Caretaker

Gojo was important in JJK right from the very beginning. This character was introduced at the beginning of the story, and it was immediately established that he was the strongest of all. Of course, being established as the strongest at the very beginning meant that he had a very important role to play later down the line. Gojo served a very important purpose in the story on various occasions, and much of that had to do with the title of the strongest that he bore, and at the same time, other ways in which he affected the plot. For instance, Gojo was the only reason why many powerful students in Jujutsu High even emerged in the first place. In fact, the very protagonist of the series, Yuji Itadori, was kept alive because of Gojo. Similarly, Yuta’s life was saved because of him as well, and there are countless other individuals who were likely affected by Gojo in one way or another.

Largely speaking, Gojo’s role in JJK was to be the strongest. He affected the plot by being the strongest in many ways. For instance, Gojo was always there to have the back of his students whenever they found themselves in danger. Of course, the author also cut him out of the story in very clever ways on various occasions, and this was largely done to make sure that the plot moved further. For instance, during the Kyoto Goodwill Event arc, Gojo was cut out of the main fights so that the story moved forward in an exciting manner, and the next generation got their opportunities to get stronger.

In Shibuya, which is widely regarded as the very best arc of JJK, fans saw something similar as Gojo was sealed away in the very beginning. This allowed the author to remove the strongest from the equation, because otherwise, the beautiful storytelling would not have been possible. Gojo being the strongest was both a blessing in disguise, and a headscratcher for the author, however, it is safe to say that he dealt with this problem reasonably well over the years.

How Gojo Died

Gojo Eventually Fell In The Battle Against The King Of Curses

Being established as the strongest meant that Gojo would eventually have to put himself in a very dangerous role in JJK, and that was the fight against the King of Curses, Sukuna. In fact, this is something that the fans knew from the very beginning of the story, given that a fight was pretty much set in stone when Gojo challenged him, and the latter replied that he would be the first one he would kill when he is back to his best.

I Hope You Don’t Mind If I Show Off A Little.

Their first fight was won by Gojo, however, the second fight turned exactly the opposite for him. Even though this battle was incredible and saw Gojo test himself against the King of Curses, he eventually ended up dying. That is not to say that Sukuna was vastly superior to Gojo. In fact, this fight was neck and neck and, on another day, the winner of this battle could easily have been Gojo.

Gojo was able to push Sukuna into a corner, and in fact, he was even able to dominate large sections of this fight. If Sukuna had not had the 10 Shadows Technique and a blueprint that was provided to him by Mahoraga, perhaps the outcome of this fight would have been completely different.

Gojo was strong enough to win this battle and that just goes to show that he truly was the strongest at one point in the series, along with Sukuna. Unfortunately for him, however, death was always to be an important part of his character.

When someone is introduced as the strongest, if they are not removed from the plot in some way, the story cannot progress in the way that the author would desire. If Gojo, as the strongest, were to stay alive in the Shinjuku Showdown arc, he would defeat Sukuna, who is the main villain, and even Kenjaku would not stand much of a chance against him. As a result, removing Gojo from the plot was very important for the author. He did that in a questionable manner, and that was to kill him off entirely. While this did give a platform to Yuji and the next-generation sorcerers, it also killed off the most important character in the entire series, and that is something that has not sat right with the fans.

The Legacy That Gojo Left Behind

Gojo Has Left Behind Something Very Precious In JJK

In the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, Gojo finally met his end and it was quite a sad event for many fans of the series. This was to be expected, given that Gojo was the most popular character in the story. However, fans will always remember him as the strongest, but at the same time, a very kind and caring person. Gojo was always defined by his strength, however, he was actually much more than just that. Even Gojo’s very own students described him to be the strongest and that is the word that best describes his character. However, as mentioned before, Gojo was actually a multifaceted character with dreams and goals of his own. Being the strongest served as not just a boon to him but also a curse.

I’m Gonna Reset This Crappy Jujutsu World.

When Gojo was the strongest, no one truly understood him. As Gojo put it himself, there is a certain level of solitude that comes with being the strongest, and this did affect him to a certain degree. However, Gojo was able to fill his life with people that he loved. At the same time, Gojo cared deeply about all the people in his life, and his legacy in JJK still remains alive through those individuals. Gojo wanted to change the corrupt system of the world and while he could have just killed the higher-ups, as he claimed himself, he wanted to create an order that would sustain the test of time. As a result, he became a teacher.

Gojo wanted to establish an era where strong sorcerers with similar ideas to him would flourish and change the world for good. Through the many characters that he ended up raising and the people that he affected by living, Gojo certainly did manage to accomplish that dream. It is now up to his students to fulfill his golden dreams, and one day, do him proud.

Of course, Gojo can potentially still return later down the line, and the door for his revival will always remain open. Regardless, his legacy is set in stone, and he might just be the most influential character not just to the fans, but also within the world of JJK. There will never be another Gojo and that is the beauty of his character.

Jujutsu Kaisen is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of JJK, Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 257, is set to be April 21, 2024.
