Jujutsu Kaisen is continuing with great intensity in the Shinjuku Showdown arc and it appears that this incredible story arc is now edging closer to its conclusion. Fans have been enjoying the battles that the author has been drawing recently, however, with every battle in JJK comes the risk of a great tragedy as any character could end up dying at any moment. Fans are very well aware of the fact that Jujutsu Kaisen does not shy away from killing off its characters, and the author has proven that on many occasions.

In fact, if anything, the fans were already prepared for the possibility of many sorcerers dying in Shinjuku, and in JJK chapter 259, a major character has just died, leaving the fans in a state of shock.

Ryomen Sukuna has been fighting valiantly in JJK, given that this is going to be his very last fight. Regardless of what fans believe, Sukuna is inevitably going to fall at the end of this battle, and that is precisely why he’s going out with a bang. Sukuna has certainly lived up to the name of the King of Curses and he is continuously surpassing all limits of sorcery to do the impossible.

Even after killing Gojo, Sukuna had enough in him to take down the weaker sorcerers around him and he now has the peak of what he could do. In the previous chapter, Sukuna unleashed his domain and launched powerful slash-based attacks against many Sorcerers. Of course, fans were very grateful that the vast majority of the sorcerers survived this onslaught by the King of Curses, however, immediately after that, Sukuna unleashed his ultimate technique, the Divine Flames. It was explained in JJK chapter 259 that Divine Flames cannot be accessed by Sukuna at any time. To get to Divine Flames, Sukuna has to complete the process of cooking, which means that he has to utilize both Cleave and Dismantle first. Only after utilizing this power can he access the flames of cooking.

Once Divine Flames are accessed, Sukuna can usually only target one individual with them. However, with a Binding Vow, Sukuna was able to get around this problem and create a technique that had a very wide effective range. That is precisely what ended up being the downfall of the sorcerers in JJK chapter 259 and Sukuna was able to scorch them to a crisp. Or so he should have been, had Todo not intervened. To protect the sorcerers in conjunction with Mei Mei’s crows and saved the lives of the vast majority of the sorcerers.

However, there was an exception to this. Both Yuji Itadori and Choso were too deep in the domain for Todo to expand his technique from outside to such a distance. Because of this, these two couldn’t have been saved by Todo.

Choso’s Death In Jujutsu Kaisen

Choso Ended Up Dying In JJK Chapter 259

In order to defeat Sukuna, the survival of Yuji Itadori is extremely important. Yuji has everything one needs to defeat Sukuna and it would be impossible without him to take down the King of Curses. As soon as Divine Flames were unleashed, Choso knew that he had to protect his little brother from this attack. This was especially true because his control over his cursed energy as well as his newly acquired powers was not great enough for him to defend himself.

Nonetheless, I must walk ahead of my little brothers. That’s why I’m strong.

As such, Choso intervened before the flames got to Yuji and created a mysterious bloodlike barrier around him. This barrier was incredibly strong and held out against Sukuna’s Divine Flames. The fact that it could hold out against Sukuna’s ultimate technique just goes to show that Choso certainly had some incredible techniques up his sleeve.

Sadly, while Choso was able to protect Yuji from Divine Flames, he was not able to do the same for himself. The flames consumed Choso and burned him to a crisp, killing him in the process. Before he could pass on, Choso apologized to Yuji for being a terrible teacher and not having been able to help him enough in life.

Of course, this was a very emotionally charged moment in the story and fans were moved to tears because of how the sacrifice played out. Yuji desperately clung to Choso, asking him not to go, however, he couldn’t do anything about it. In the end, Choso reunited with Eso and Kechizu, leaving behind his little brother, Yuji, all alone to face off against the King of Curses.

The Importance Of Choso’s Death

Choso’s Death Sets Yuji Up For Victory

Choso’s death was not all that surprising to the fans. While it was incredibly sad, fans knew that at some point, Choso would end up dying or sacrificing himself for Yuji. That is how the author writes his story and, as such, this pattern isn’t something that’s taken the fans by surprise. However, on the flip side, fans wonder as to whether the sacrifice was necessary at all. Choso’s sacrifice doesn’t really serve much of a purpose here. In fact, this seems to be a repeat of the events of Shibuya, where Nobara’s death left Yuji shaken to the very core, and then Tofo jumped in to help his brother get back on his feet once again to keep on fighting.

So what? Is that any reason not to put my life on the line for my little brother?

Similarly, after Choso’s death, Yuji was left visibly shaken in his resolve, and his belief that he was just a cog who had to play his role was shaken as well. That is precisely where Aoi Todo stepped in and once again galvanized Yuji in an attempt to take on the King of Curses.

The major reason why Choso had to die was to get the option of Divine Flames off of Sukuna’s list of weapons. Now, sukuna cannot use his cursed technique for a while and this is the perfect opportunity for the sorcerers to take him down. Of course, the death of a beloved character also serves as a shock factor, which is what the author of the series absolutely loves to do, regardless of whether it makes the story better or worse. For now, fans need to keep all their attention on Yuji and Todo, who will look to finish this battle, especially after Choso’s major sacrifice. Essentially, it can be said that without Choso, the pathway to victory would not have opened up, and for that reason, Yuji will eternally be grateful to him, as well as the rest of the sorcerers in Japan.

Clearly, the battle against Sukuna is in the final phase now and fans will most definitely get to see the King of Curses fall in the next few chapters. It is not a question of if but when and all the people wishing for Sukuna to win the Shinjuku showdown are going to be disappointed to know that this villain has run his time and will fall sooner or later.

Jujutsu Kaisen is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, JJK 259, is set to be May 12, 2024.
