Jujutsu Kaisen: Is Kenjaku A Better Villain Than Sukuna?

Highlights

  • Kenjaku is the evil mastermind with intricate plans while Sukuna is the powerful and selfish final boss in Jujutsu Kaisen.
  • Kenjaku’s intelligence and body-hopping ability make him terrifying, while Sukuna’s unmatched power and techniques make him the strongest.
  • Both villains play vital roles in the narrative, impacting the heroes’ journeys and challenging them to grow and overcome in unique ways.

Jujutsu Kaisen has one of the best rogue galleries in all of modern Shonen. The villains of this series aren’t just incredibly fascinating and terrifying foes in their own right, they are also directly tied to the journey of the heroes themselves, standing as important hurdles that they must overcome in order to grow. These villains play a vital role not only in their own character arcs but even impact the fates of the heroes of the series.

Among all of these evildoers, Kenjaku and Sukuna stand out as the foremost antagonists of Jujutsu Kaisen, both in terms of their strength as final villains as well as the psychological and narrative impact they have. However, the debate between who is the better of the two is ongoing within the community. Since many say that Kenjaku is better and others say Sukuna, let’s take a look at both of them and see why they are so important in this world.

In terms of all the villains in the story, Kenjaku fills the traditional role of the evil mastermind. However, despite his incredible intelligence, he is not someone who is cocky, which is a trope that is often seen in fiction as his plans are incredibly intricate and wide-spanning, making him someone who simply cannot afford to underestimate his opponents.

Kenjaku was first introduced as Pseudo-Geto, an impostor inhabiting the body of Suguru Geto, an already powerful sorcerer in his own right. Over time, it was revealed that he was the one behind pretty much every major event that happened in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, as his main plan was to optimize Cursed Energy to form a giant and powerful Cursed Spirit. To do this, he had been laying plans into motion since the Heian Era, which was over 1000 years ago, which he finally unveiled with the Culling Game.

Regret, huh? I’ve forgotten what that feels like.

Kenjaku is an incredible character whose intelligence is his defining feature. Even though he is incredibly powerful (enough to be one of the strongest characters in the series), the true danger lies with his intellect and the lengths he will go to satisfy his curiosity. Kenjaku has inhabited many bodies in the past, chief of which was Yuji’s mother so he could give birth to the perfect vessel for Sukuna. His insatiable inquisitiveness and willingness to put his plans above all else make for a terrifying foe who’s ready to commit atrocious acts to get his way.

Kenjaku’s Powers and Abilities:

Not only is he incredibly intelligent, but Kenjaku is also one of the strongest characters in the series. His innate technique is body-hopping, which allows him to jump from one body to the next. While this isn’t strong on its own, it allows him to claim and fully use the Cursed Technique of those he inhabits, giving him one of the most diverse arsenals of any sorcerer in the series. Kenjaku also has a barrier-less Domain, which is one of the most powerful in Jujutsu Kaisen.

The Case For Sukuna

First Appearance

Jujutsu Kaisen, Episode 1, “Ryomen Sukuna”

On the other hand, Ryomen Sukuna perfectly fits the ‘final boss’ trope of the series. Unlike Kenjaku, he knows exactly how powerful he is, and he isn’t afraid to admit it. Sukuna’s strength is legendary, which has earned him the moniker of the ‘Strongest Sorcerer in History’ since he was so powerful that no one could even think about challenging him. Since the Heian Era, Sukuna has gone unchallenged.

Through the binding of his soul with his own fingers, Sukuna was able to survive for over 1000 years before his finger was consumed by Yuji Itadori, which led to his soul manifesting in the boy’s body. Since then, Sukuna has realized his full strength after inhabiting the body of Megumi Fushiguro and going on to singlehandedly defeat all of Jujutsu High, including Gojo, who is famous for being the strongest sorcerer of the modern age.

I’ll show you what real Jujutsu is!

Unlike Kenjaku, Sukuna has never had any grand plans like the Culling Game or to optimize Cursed Energy. Instead, he is the embodiment of selfishness, as he lives only for himself and to satisfy his needs, which has led to him garnering an ungodly amount of power, as he was able to consume whatever he wanted. His self-reliance is also the subject of one of the greatest dichotomies in the series, which finally came to a head in his epic battle with Gojo. The two of them not only fought to settle the debate of who’s stronger but also to see whose philosophy on life and strength is the superior one.

Sukuna’s Powers and Abilities:

Sukuna is by far the most powerful character in the series. Due to his unmatched knowledge of the nature of Jujutsu and his mastery over it, the King of Curses turned from a human to a Cursed Spirit strong enough to fight against the entirety of Jujutsu High, which he was able to do thanks to his plethora of techniques. His main offensive tool is Cleave and Dismantle, a Cursed Technique that sends out different kinds of invisible slashes, whereas his other technique, called Divine Flames, lets him fire off an extremely powerful arrow of fire with near-nuclear power. Finally, his Domain Expansion is also a barrier-less one and is the strongest in the series.
