Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the biggest and most popular anime series in the world. The show took off after an incredible first season, which drew in an enormous number of fans. The first season of Jujutsu Kaisen was not rapid, mainly because it had to introduce the main cast of characters and establish the villains. It also explained the power system in great detail so that fans would not be confused by it.
After the season’s conclusion, fans were eagerly awaiting the release of the subsequent season, which debuted in 2023 and covered Gojo’s Past arc and the Shibuya Incident arc. The first arc delved into the past of the strongest sorcerer in the world, while the second covered one of the most daunting events. Not long after the final episode aired, MAPPA made an announcement on X (formerly Twitter) confirming that the Culling Game arc would be a part of the next anime adaptation. Before delving into what this means for the series, it’s imperative to go over where the story stands.
The Shibuya Incident Arc Shocked The Entire World
According to most fans, the Shibuya Incident arc is the best one in the series to date. The arc is focused on the plans of the Cursed Spirits as they try to capture Gojo Satoru, the most powerful sorcerer in the world. The Curse Spirits took advantage of Satoru’s humanity by trapping him in an area with hundreds of innocent people. The sentient Cursed Spirits attacked him in the hopes of getting the better of him. Satoru was aware of their intentions, and he knew that the Cursed Spirits did not care about humans.
He tried to minimize the number of casualties in Shibuya, but the Cursed Spirits were one step ahead of him. Eventually, he was captured, which meant that the sorcerers were at a serious disadvantage against their enemies. When news began to spread, the sorcerers knew that they couldn’t just stand idly by while Satoru was captured. So they formulated a plan to get him out. The two sides went at it hammer and tongs, so it was hardly surprising that many characters met their end.
An Incredible Amount Of Bloodshed
In the Shibuya Incident arc, many noteworthy characters were killed. Obviously, the deaths of the heroes hurt the audience the most. They had to see Nanami being killed by Mahito, after which the Special Grade Cursed Spirit got his hands on Kugisaki Nobara. Nanami’s death was somewhat expected, especially after his close run-in with Mahito in the first season. Nobara’s death, on the other hand, was completely out of the blue. She was chasing Mahito’s clone in hopes of killing him. Unfortunately, she grew too confident, and it ultimately led to her death.
The Cursed Spirits also suffered multiple casualties on their side. Dagon was killed mercilessly by Toji Fushiguro, while Hanami was demolished by Gojo Satoru. Jogo met his end at the hands of Sukuna. The former put up a valiant effort, but it wasn’t nearly enough to take down the King of the Curses. Finally, Mahito was killed by Pseudo-Geto, which was indubitably one of the highlights of the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen.
What To Expect From Jujutsu Kaisen’s The Culling Game Arc
The Culling Game arc is the ninth story arc in the manga. It comes after the Itadori Extermination arc and the Perfect Preparation arc. The Itadori Extermination arc is just seven chapters long, and the subsequent arc has 15 chapters. The Culling Game arc has 63 chapters. So, the third season will have more than 23 episodes unless MAPPA drastically increases the pace of each episode.
However, it is very likely that the studio will stick with its current pace. So, the third season of the anime will likely be the longest to date. The Culling Game arc has a lot of action, and MAPPA specializes in animating fighting sequences. Naturally, fans can expect the third season to supplant the first two. There will also be the introduction of new characters who will elevate the story further.
When Will the Culling Game Arc Be Released?
Since the second season of the anime just ended, it is safe to say that Jujutsu Kaisen anime won’t be returning for at least another year. MAPPA has been creating one spectacular project after another, and they have never let the fans down. So, it is highly likely that the Jujutsu Kaisen’s Culling Game arc will be released in late 2024 or early 2025. If it is released before these dates, it will be a bonus.
Along with the announcement, the studio also revealed a short teaser for the Culling Game arc, in which fans can see Pseud-Geto, Choso, Yuta, and Yuji. The teaser was enough to hype fans for the next season. MAPPA will certainly release more teasers in 2024 to help the fans get a better idea of what to expect from the third season of the anime.
