During the Culling Game arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, the villainous mastermind Kenjaku awoke many different ancient sorcerers from past ages into the bodies of people living in the current day. The strength and power of each of these sorcerers varied from being very weak, of middling strength, to being incredibly powerful, as in the case of Haba, Hazenoki and Kashimo respectively.
However, arguably the most powerful technique of all these participants, and probably the strongest technique in all of Jujutsu Kaisen, belonged to an ancient sorcerer named Angel, who inhabited the body of an unassuming girl named Hana Kurusu. This technique was powerful enough to kill the strongest sorcerer of all time, Ryomen Sukuna, and would have finished the job if not for one simple mistake, so let’s break down Angel’s Cursed Technique.
Angel and Hana’s Backstory
As for Angel’s backstory, there is little to no information about who she was before the Culling Game. All that is known is that she was a Heian-era sorcerer who was a part of the Desshi Pacification Squad and made a deal with Kenjaku to be reincarnated into the Game. However, unlike the other ancient sorcerers, she had the goal of opposing Sukuna and Kenjaku, only willing to take part in the Culling Game to wipe out all other incarnated sorcerers, as she viewed the possession of their vessels as a violation of natural law.
Instead of possessing her vessel, she formed a symbiotic relationship with her; a young girl named Hana Kurusu. When Hana was a child, she was kidnapped and held hostage for a year by a Cursed Spirit. One day, Megumi found the Spirit and exorcised it with his Divine Dogs, saving Hana from its clutches, an event which made Hana develop romantic feelings for him. Along with that, however, she was also greatly inspired by his kindness, wanting to devote her life to helping people just as Megumi helped her.
The Technique Extinguishing Abilities of Jacob’s Ladder
Technique Extinguishment is Angel’s Cursed Technique and is arguably the most powerful one in the entire series. The main reason for this is that it has a property called ‘Nullification’, in which, after the technique has been cast, any and all techniques caught under its light are completely nullified. There are no exceptions to this rule, meaning that even if Gojo or Sukuna are caught in the attack, they too would lose their techniques.
Even barriers and different Cursed Objects are no exception to this rule, as Technique Extinguishment remains the only way of opening the Prison Realm outside of finding the back end, which implies that no other form of Jujutsu is beyond this. Another aspect of this technique is incarnation reversal, which essentially means that it can remove incarnated sorcerers from the vessel they inhabit. While there is a small chance that the vessel will survive this forceful removal, their death alongside the incarnation is far more likely.
In the manga, Angel/Hana is seen to use the Maximum Output of her technique, called Jacob’s Ladder. Using this technique conjures a four-winged trumpet within her hands as well as a massive circle of light in the sky above her. This circle consists of a heptagram in the middle and incantations along its border resembling crosses. When Angel blows the trumpet, a massive and broad pillar of light shoots through the middle of the circle and encompasses whatever is below, extinguishing the techniques of anyone or anything caught in it.
Despite the power of this technique, it was only ever seen in use once. Angel’s main goal is to take down someone she calls ‘The Disgraced One’, which happens to be Sukuna. After he takes over Megumi’s body, Hana unleashes Jacob’s Ladder on the King of Curses, almost killing him where he stands. However, her love for Megumi blinds her from finishing the job, allowing Sukuna to trick her and take her out of the fight.
