In Invincible, the main protagonist, Mark Grayson, otherwise known as Invincible, has become Earth’s most valued superhero, with his father, Omni-Man, betraying the planet, his family, and his comrades. With Invincible’s notoriety growing on Earth and among intergalactic species, the superhero has become a target for many, with season 2 showcasing the variety of villains keen on Invincible.
As a result of the targeting of Invincible, many villains have succeeded in causing Mark problems. Invincible has been shown to have many weaknesses in terms of strength and his mentality, leading to the superhero being susceptible to being defeated due to his vulnerabilities.
7 Lack Of Experience
Invincible’s Lack Of Experience As A Superhero And An Adult Makes Him Vulnerable
In the Amazon Prime Video show Invincible, Mark’s journey sees him develop as both a person and a superhero, with the increased experience aiding his development. Despite this, due to Mark only being Invincible for over a year, he lacks the amount of experience and know-how to fully succeed in his role. Throughout the show, Invincible is shown to suffer defeat by several villains, with the superhero lacking the expertise and understanding to get the job done.
Invincible’s mission with Titan that saw them take on Machine Head and Boss Beast showed Invincible’s lack of instincts and gullible nature, with Invincible failing to see himself being deceived and overpowered.
6 Too Emotional
Mark Struggles With The Emotions Of Being A Superhero
Due to the wild events that occur in Mark’s life, many of these events take a toll on Mark, leading to emotional vulnerability. Mark deals with a lot of trauma, such as the betrayal of his father and the harm to family and friends, causing Mark to suffer, with the superhero life proving to be a tricky balance.
Along with his relationship with Amber and his academic studies, Mark struggles to balance his two different lives, which leads to the breakdown of the relationships he cares for the most.
5 Self-Doubt
Invincible Doubts Himself Despite His Power And Potential
Throughout Invincible, Mark suffers from severe self-doubt as he becomes Earth’s most essential and valued superhero after his father leaves the planet. Being the son of Omni-Man, a Viltrumite, Mark is expected to step up to his dad’s plate, although Mark struggles to deal with the pressure of the job.
Particularly in season 2, after his dad departs from Earth, Mark starts fearing becoming his father, with Mark sharing his doubts with Atom Eve early on in the season. After killing Angstrom Levy in the season finale, Mark again doubts himself, with his Dad’s image being heavily fixated on his mind.
4 Lack Of Understanding Of Viltrumites
Invincible Lacks The Knowledge Needed To Defeat His Foes
In the universe of Invincible, no race of people is stronger than the Viltrumites, hailing from Viltrum. Reigning over a vast proportion of the universe, the Viltrumites seek to control all planets and civilizations, including Earth. With Mark being introduced to the Viltrumites through his Dad, he still lacks the understanding of their race in order to defend Earth from their impending attack.
Viltrumites such as Omni-Man and Anissa have shown their overwhelming power on Earth, with Mark struggling to deal with the Viltrumites without knowing their possible weaknesses. Mark’s one saving grace is his friendship with Allen the Alien, which may lead to him finding weaknesses to defeat his ancestors through the intergalactic union of the Coalition of Planets.
3 Family And Friends
Mark’s Reliance On Family And Friends Makes Them Vulnerable
Towards the end of season 2, Mark’s actions as a superhero come back to haunt him and his family as Debbie and Oliver are held hostage by Angstrom Levy, one of season 2’s many antagonists. The harm dealt to Debbie and Oliver shows Invincible’s vulnerabilities, with villains being able to target Mark’s family in order to deal damage to Invincible.
Aside from Debbie and Oliver, Mark, being the son of Omni-Man, has made the Viltrumites focus on him as one of their biggest emerging foes. When Anissa arrives on Earth, she blackmails Mark into leaving with her by threatening the life of Amber, leaving Mark in a weakened possession that may be exploited again in the future.
2 Prefers To Work Solo
Invincible Operating On His Own Can Be Dangerous
Although Invincible has had his fair share of battles with comrades, the superhero typically opts to go solo when trying to save the day. Despite his incredible powers, Mark often finds himself in trouble due to his lack of experience, leading to the superhero being involved in chaos of his own making.
When Mark goes to rectify his father’s actions in Atlantis, Mark is almost killed trying to reason with the Atlanteans, with Mark facing a trial by combat that proves to be a major uphill battle. If backed up by another ally, the mission would have gone more smoothly for Invincible, reducing the chances of Mark potentially perishing.
1 Not A Full Strength Viltrumite
Lacks The Peak Age And Power Of The Strongest Viltrumites
In Invincible, despite the potential Mark has shown, he is yet to reach his complete power limit due to his young age as a Viltrumite. The peak of a Viltrumites’ power tends to occur when they age, meaning Mark will not be able to be on par with Viltrumites like Thragg and Anissa while he is still a young adult.
In his battle with his father, Omni-Man, Mark is shown to be completely outmatched by the older and more experienced Viltrumite, leading to his near demise. Even when Anissa arrives on Earth, she embarrasses Mark on the battlefield, showing the true power of the Viltrumites and what they can achieve.
