Inside Out 2: The New Emotion Anxiety, Explained

Highlights

  • Anxiety will be a new emotion in Inside Out 2, reflecting Riley’s struggles with being a teenager and trying to fit in.
  • May Hawke will voice Anxiety, bringing her experience from Stranger Things and Fear Street to the role.
  • Inside Out 2 will feature four new emotions and hit theaters on June 14th, 2024, promising to be just as emotional as the original film.

There’s no doubt that Inside Out has been one of Pixar‘s most popular movies ever since it was released in 2015. Audiences of every age appreciated the layered yet accessible story about a young girl dealing with new emotions, and it was a great reminder that everyone has to deal with their feelings. With the release date of Inside Out 2 approaching, fans are getting excited. It seems that Inside Out 2 can be a huge success for Pixar once again.

There are four new emotions in Inside Out 2, including Anxiety. This is the most intriguing new emotion considering that Riley is now a teenager. Fans have many questions about Anxiety before Inside Out 2 hits theaters.

What Role Will Anxiety Play In Inside Out 2?Disgust, Envy, and Anxiety in Inside Out 2

Anxiety is the sixth emotion in Riley Andersen’s mind in Inside Out 2 and they will play a similar role the other emotions played in Inside Out. However, it could be argued that Anxiety has the most important role of all in the highly-anticipated Pixar sequel because feeling anxious is such a rite of passage for teenagers. The clever idea of Inside Out 2 is that Riley is now coping with the sometimes horrible and always intense daily routines of high school, and that means worrying a lot.

Anxiety will try to make Riley’s life easier while forgetting that most of the time, the things that people worry about never actually end up happening. Anxiety will try to make Riley organized and ready for anything. But, as anyone who has struggled with anxiety knows, this will only make Riley think about upsetting worst-case scenarios. If this new character is as relatable as they sound, then it’s likely that Anxiety in Inside Out 2 will become one of the most iconic Pixar characters.

Since Inside Out 2 lost two great actors and Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling didn’t return to play Fear and Disgust,

Anxiety needs to be a solid new character. If Anxiety is funny, compelling, and relatable, then there’s no reason why Inside Out 2 can’t be as successful as the original movie.

In the Inside Out 2 trailer, Anxiety is introduced, and it’s clear that the other emotions in Riley’s mind are unsure at first. They say, “Hello, I’m Anxiety. Where can I put my stuff? Anxiety introduces the other three new emotions in Inside Out 2 and says:

“I’m sorry, we wanted to make such a good first impression.”

In an interview with The Direct, Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann said about this new emotion: “I’m especially excited about Anxiety … There are a lot of different types of anxiety, but we’re really leaning into social anxiety, wanting to fit in and be part of a group. Wondering, ‘Am I good enough?'”

Who Plays Anxiety In Inside Out 2?Joy and Anxiety in Inside Out 2

Maya Hawke plays Anxiety in Inside Out 2, and she was a great choice for this character considering her acting resume. She has played the hilarious and clever Robin Buckley ever since season 3 of Stranger Things and also starred in the movies Italian Studies, Mainstream, Asteroid City, and Do Revenge.

Besides playing Robin in Stranger Things, Maya Hawke’s most well-known role has been Heather Watkins in the opening scene of Fear Street: Part One. While Fear Street had many fun Easter eggs that fans missed, no one could ignore Hawke’s opening sequence which evoked the classic Scream opening scene when Ghostface calls Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore). While Hawke has mostly stuck to horror and drama, her role in the teen comedy Do Revenge proves that she has the necessary acting talent to voice Anxiety in Inside Out 2.

There are a few details that have been confirmed about Inside Out 2. The most important is that there are four new emotions: embarrassment, Ennui, Anxiety, and Envy. The movie will also be released on June 14th, 2024 and will follow Riley Andersen as she navigates being a teenager.

According to The Guardian, Amy Poehler, who voiced Joy, explained why she liked Inside Out so much, and it’s definitely something that audiences can relate to. Her words also prove why fans are so excited for Inside Out 2. Poehler said:

“It’s OK to be sad, and it’s OK to have feelings that aren’t maybe the ones that you thought you were supposed to have or are what are expected of you. It’s this beautiful attempt at taking this very big intellectual idea and making it this very small, human, connecting experience.”
