Blumhouse’s creepy bear horror movie Imaginary was released on March 8th, 2024, and tells a scary story of Chauncey, a child’s worst nightmare. While many people remember having an imaginary friend or even thinking that a stuffed animal could come to life, few would say that imaginary figure was actually evil. When Jessica (DeWanda Wise)’s stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) gets a stuffed bear named Chauncey, Jessica realizes there is something seriously wrong.
Like the endings of other Blumhouse horror movies, Imaginary has a mysterious final scene that suggests the terror is not over. While there is no announcement of an Imaginary sequel, the unnerving ending does set up a second scary tale about this seemingly innocent bear.
What Happens At The End Of Blumhouse’s Imaginary?
At the end of the Blumhouse horror movie Imaginary, Jessica, Taylor (Taegen Burns), and Gloria (Betty Buckley) go to the Never Ever Realm. After they learn that Jessica forgot an important part of her history and that Chauncey the evil bear forced her to visit this place and that is why she moved in with her grandparents, Chauncey attacks Gloria.
While Jessica fights back against Chauncey by stabbing the bear with scissors, this is still a scary ending just like M3GAN‘s because it’s unclear if the bear’s evil can ever be stopped. Unfortunately for Jessica, when she sees her husband Max (Tom Payne) again, she thinks that she is free but it turns out that Chauncey is keeping her in the Never Ever realm because she left him as a child.

Next, Chauncey becomes a terrifying spider who stares at the other characters and does his best to control them by looking into their eyes. Unlike scary dolls in horror movies, this bear can change shape, which makes it uniquely dangerous. The ending of Blumhouse’s Imaginary explains that Chauncey is a demon from this other realm.
After Taylor and Alice help Jessica escape, with Alice lighting Chauncey on fire, they check into a hotel since their house has been destroyed. In a chilling final scene, they see a child playing with a bear that looks just like Chauncey. While they check into a new hotel, Imaginary makes it clear that Chauncey is a memorable Blumhouse horror villain who they might never be able to truly run away from.
What Is Blumhouse’s Imaginary About?
Imaginary tells the story of Jessica, a woman who becomes a stepmother to Alice and Taylor after marrying Max. While Jessica tries to help Alice, who loves a stuffed bear named Chauncey and who has bad dreams about a spider named Simon, Jessica has difficulty recalling moments from her own childhood. It turns out that in order to save Alice, Taylor, and herself from Chauncey, Jessica will have to tap into her childhood fears and her history with the eerie bear.
Although Imaginary might not be considered one of the best Blumhouse horror movies since it’s fairly corny, it does have some strong character development. It’s also moving watching the dynamic between Jessica and her two stepdaughters.
Jessica’s former babysitter, Gloria, sadly dies despite doing the right thing and helping Jessica understand her past. Gloria explains that Chauncey is both Alice and Jessica’s imaginary friend and that these spirits can turn evil if the children ignore them. This creepy foreshadowing proves that Chauncey will never let either of the characters go.
In an interview with io9, DeWanda Wise talked about what Jessica experiences. She said:
“In our movie, you have my character who has experienced something very difficult, very young, and you’re literally watching her in real time come through on the other side.”
DeWise continued:
“And the function of horror movies, especially for young viewers, for younger moviegoers, is to practice fear—to experience, ‘Oh, I was really scared, but I’m okay.’ And that’s what I hope—that is ultimately what I hope.”
What Was The Critical Response To Blumhouse’s Imaginary?
As is often the case with entertaining horror movies that can be a little corny, some of thereviews for Imaginary aren’t great. While some critics embraced the campy fun of the movie, others thought that the movie needed a little something more.
Several film critics quoted on Imaginary‘s Rotten Tomatoes page felt that Imaginary should be more compelling. Horror critics and fans might agree that while M3GAN and Chucky are iconic killer dolls, Chauncey the bear leaves a little more to be desired.
However, Imaginary is a guilty pleasure kind of movie, and fans might see more of Chauncey in the future. According to Comicbook.com, Jason Blum said he wanted an Imaginary and M3GAN crossover. Blum said:
“Well I’d love to see Chauncey and M3GAN have a fight. Maybe one day we’ll do that.”
