The majority of House of the Dragon‘s most formidable dragons perish in the civil war dubbed the Dance of the Dragons. These include battle-hardened beasts such as Vhagar, Caraxes, Meleys, and Syrax, as well as younger, nimble dragons such as Arrax, Vermax, and Moondancer. A few dragons also perish in the unfortunate event known as the Storming of the Dragonpit in Game of Thrones lore.

The lust for the Iron Throne and the Seven Six Kingdoms draws out the realm-wide war between Aegon II and Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. This war is pretty much the reason why the Dragon Age came to an end. The beginning of HBO’s House of the Dragon – Season 2 will cover the onset of the Dance of the Dragons, and therefore Targaryen dragons and their riders are expected in battle scenes. Per lore, the Last Dragon dies during Aegon the Younger’s reign, earning him the derogatory nickname – the Dragonbane.

Dragons That Survive The Dance Of The Dragons

The Last Dragon is a she-dragon under the yoke of a weakened House Targaryen. She dies at King’s Landing during the reign of Aegon III, or Aegon the Younger. By this time, the two Targaryen dragons that survive the Dance of the Dragons (Morning and Silverwing) are dead, too.

With the death of the last Targaryen dragon in 153 AC, the realm bids adieu to Targaryen dragons, and the associated deterrence. After this, the subsequent Targaryen monarchs, more notably Aegon the Fifth, retain little control over the nobility in the realm. He finds it difficult to impose decisions and introduce reforms that benefit the Smallfolk because of opposition from all sides.

Who Is The Last Dragon In Game Of Thrones Lore?

The Last Dragon was born during Aegon III’s time and died at a young age. She also laid a clutch of five eggs, all of which were unhatched. Per an interesting piece of tidbit in lore, the hedge knight named Ser Arlan of Pennytree who was the precursor to Ser Duncan the Tall (one of the two main characters of an upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off) visited King’s Landing with his grandfather in 152 AC, and saw the sickly green dragon and her clutch of eggs. Ser Arlan described the eggs as “hard as stone, but beautiful.” He told his squire, Duncan:

Some say King Aegon poisoned her. The third Aegon that would be, not King Daeron’s father, but the one they named Dragonbane, or Aegon the Unlucky. He was afraid of dragons, for he’d seen his uncle’s beast devour his own mother.

Did Aegon III Poison The Last Dragon?

Aegon the Younger (later known as Aegon III) helplessly watched as his mother was devoured by her half-brother Aegon II’s mount, Sunfyre. Due to this incident, he developed a fear and harbored hatred against dragons. He was installed on the throne after the dragon catastrophe nearly wiped out most of his family and lords in the realm. While Aegon III hated the very sight of Lady Rhaena’s hatchling Morning at the Dance’s end, the claim that he poisoned the last dragon remains doubtful.

Since the Last Dragon barely lived through a king’s reign, not much is known about her. Her skull is purportedly among the nineteen dragon skulls adorned on the walls of the throne room in the Red Keep.

What Happened After The Last Dragon’s Death?

Few in the Game of Thrones universe believe that magic left the world when the Last Dragon died. The event also redefined the seasons according to Ser Arlan. He believed that the Westerosi summers were shorter and the winters were harsher once the dragons were gone.

In 259 AC, the Targaryens gather at Summerhall during Aegon V’s time as king and Ser Duncan’s as Lord Commander to hatch seven fossilized dragon eggs. The King wished for dragons to act as the main deterrent against possible aggression and hostility from his nobility. The dragon hatching attempt went out of control and Summerhall was razed to the ground. King Aegon V and his Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Duncan, perished in this fire.

Finally, Daenerys Targaryen brought back dragons at the wastelands beyond Lhazar. She hatched three petrified dragon eggs and named the hatchlings after her late husband and two older brothers. Per HBO’s Game of Thrones canon, Drogon outlives his brothers while Viserion and Rhaegal die in Westeros. Drogon is currently the last living dragon in the Known World.

House of the Dragon Season 2 premieres June 16 at 9/8c on HBO and Max.
