While quirky main characters like Philip J. Fry (Billy West), Leela (Katey Sagel), and Bender Rodriguez (John DiMaggio) are the reason why Futurama is so popular, side characters like Lars Fillmore (West) still make a big impression. Some of the most well-crafted Futurama episodes strike a perfect balance between including familiar faces and new characters who add some drama and intrigue to the time travel story. Season 5 includes four Futurama movies, and Lars plays a key role in Futurama: Bender’s Big Score. The movie is as humorous and clever as the rest of the animated TV series.

Futurama: Bender’s Big Score features many famous and hilarious actors, from Sarah Silverman to Mark Hamill, and West voiced both Fry and Lars. There’s a lot to know about who Lars is on Futurama and what happens to him.

Lars appears in the movie Futurama: Bender’s Big Score, which was released in 2007. He is a time paradox-duplicate of the main character, Philip J. Fry. Leela (Katey Sagel) and Lars begin a romantic relationship before she learns who he is.

Bender’s Big Score is filled with action and drama, and Lars is introduced because he fixes Hermes Conrad (Phil LaMarr) after his decapitation. The characters are happy that Planet Express has been reinstated after a two year-hiatus. Fry, however, is upset to see Leela and Lars flirting with each other.

While Lars on Futurama might seem like a silly, goofy character at first, he has a deeper, meaningful storyline like many other characters. His scenes with Leela prove that Futurama is a heartfelt TV series because the two care about each other so much. When Lars speaks, he mixes humor with emotion, like when he says:

“Hello, everyone who isn’t Leela. And a special hello to everyone else.”

In another scene, when Nudar (David Herman), one of three aliens who take over Planet Express, wants the code that allows time travel, Lars proves he is in touch with his emotions. He says:

“I’ve… always loved you. Don’t hurt her. I’ll give you the code.”

Who Is Lars In Futurama?

Like Marianne (Emila Clarke) on Futurama, Lars is one of the main character’s love interests who makes a big impression. Just like Marianne and Zoidberg meet because of her job as a flower shop owner, Leela and Lars meet because he’s a Head Museum technician. A lesser TV series might not give side characters like Marianne and Lars a career, but Futurama characters like Scruffy, Lars, and Marianne are well-rounded and interesting.

Lars has a fascinating backstory that is more light-hearted than many episodes of Futurama, which tend to be sad. It turns out that Lars isn’t actually a separate character but a duplicate of Fry. Lars came into being because Fry wanted to eat pizza in 2000 and he traveled back in time twice. The first time Fry traveled back in time, he decided to freeze himself. The second Fry worked at a pizza place and lived in an apartment over the restaurant for twelve years. It’s also important to note that Fry’s duplicate lost his hair and injured his larynx.

Lars has a complicated character arc on Futurama that is filled with emotion. When Lars almost marries Leela, Hermes comes close to losing his head again at the wedding, and Lars learns that time paradox duplicates can’t live very long. After Lars breaks up with Leela, the most important part of Futurama: Bender’s Big Score happens when Lars kills Nudar with Bender’s duplicate. The explosion ends up killing Lars, too.

During this explosion, Futurama fans learn that Lars isn’t a distinct character but a duplicate of Fry who wanted to be frozen so he could date Leela. This big reveal happens thanks to Lars’s tattoo of Bender.

How Many Futurama Movies Are There?

  • Futurama: Bender’s Big Score (2007)
  • Futurama: The Beast with Billion Backs (2008)
  • Futurama: Bender’s Game (2008)
  • Futurama: Into The Wild Green Yonder (2009)

Like in the best Futurama episode about Bender, Futurama: Bender’s Big Score sees the beloved robot making some wise decisions and thinking about how the past and present will affect the future. Bender takes off the tattoo on Lars and time travels. When he gets to 2000, he gives Fry, who is in the cryogenic tube, the tattoo. The story ends dramatically with every duplicate of Bender exploding and space’s fabric ripping as a result.

While fans might ask when an animated TV series needs to end, the Futurama Hulu revival proves there are a lot of smart stories left to tell in this compelling universe. Leela and Fry’s relationship takes center stage in Futurama: Bender’s Big Score, which introduces fans to Lars, and their romance is still a central plot point in the revival. Lars’s Futurama character is an important part of this couple’s love story.
