Science Ninja Team Gatchaman is an animated series created by Japanese anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida and produced by his company Tatsunoko Production. It premiered on Fuji TV in late 1972 and ran for three years, with its original run comprising 105 episodes in total. Widely touted as one of the best sentai anime ever made, the series subsequently spawned several remakes, reboots, and spin-offs.
Funko’s Gatchaman Jumbo Chan Figure Coming Soon In Limited Quantities
Funko has now opted to pay homage to Science Ninja Team Gatchaman with a new limited-edition Jumbo Chan collectible, which Game Rant can exclusively reveal. The company’s latest product arrives in the form of a 14-inch hard vinyl figure based on Ken Washio, one of the five protagonists from the cult-classic anime. As is the case with all of Funko’s collectibles that are over a foot tall, the Gatchaman figure will come with a fairly hefty price tag, being set to retail at $250. Funko only intends to make 1,200 units in total.
Due to the limited quantities that are planned to be made available, prospective buyers will get a chance to secure their pre-order via a lottery. The raffle will be held on Funko’s official website, with sign-ups being set to open on June 20, at 9am PT / 12pm ET. The company will be accepting registrations until 8am PT / 11am ET on June 24, while the raffle itself will only be open to U.S. customers.
The newly announced Gatchaman figure will launch as part of Funko’s Jumbo Chan collection, a limited-edition lineup of products inspired by classic Japanese toys from the ’70s and ’80s. The first Jumbo Chan offering was unveiled in April 2024 in the form of another 14-inch vinyl figure of Freddy Funko, the company’s long-time mascot. Much like the upcoming Gatchaman collectible, only 1,200 units of Freddy Funko Jumbo Chan figure were made available via a raffle that concluded on May 13, with first shipments being estimated to start arriving in late July 2024.
As is normally the case with such limited-edition offerings, each Gatchaman figure will be bundled with a certificate of authenticity. Customers who are lucky enough to win the raffle will be limited to pre-ordering one unit, which is a standard anti-scalping measure. Funko’s recent track record indicates that new Jumbo Chan products may be announced as early as summer 2024.
