Five Nights At Freddy’s Movie Designer Explains Why There Was Confusion About Bonnie’s Color

Highlights

  • The color of Bonnie the Rabbit in Five Nights at Freddy’s has sparked debate among fans, with some thinking he is purple, but the game creator confirmed he is blue.
  • The production designer initially got Bonnie’s color wrong, but after receiving clarification from the game creator, they were able to nail down the correct shade.
  • Bonnie’s color confusion may have been due to lighting in the first game, but regardless of his color, he remains one of the scariest animatronics in the franchise.

Bonnie the Rabbit, one of the four original animatronics in Five Nights at Freddy’s, made a buzz due to fans being torn about whether he is blue or purple. Even FNAF designer Robert Bennet admitted he got Bonnie’s color wrong and only got it right after the FNAF game creator confirmed it.

Bonnie is an animatronic rabbit at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and the guitarist in Freddy’s band. He is one of the primary antagonists in the Five Nights at Freddy’s series—and one of the original four animatronics possessed by the children murdered by William Afton. The children seek revenge against Afton by assaulting adults in the pizzeria after hours. Bonnie is popular for his blue or lavender fur, the light gray section on his muzzle, red eyes, red bowtie, bunny ears, and red and black electric guitar.

Many Five Nights at Freddy‘s fans got Bonnie’s color wrong, thinking he was purple, including Bennet. However, in the November 2023 issue of SFX Magazine, Bennet admitted that he initially “made Bonnie purple.” However, when he clarified the animatronic’s hue with FNAF game creator Scott Cawthon, the latter explained that “Bonnie is blue,” ending the debate over the animatronic’s correct shade. For Bennet’s end, it was a lot of back-and-forth work to nail down Bonnie’s shade.

However, even if Bennet got Bonnie’s color wrong the first time he designed the animatronics, the production designer told the magazine that Cawthon was happy with the overall look when he visited the set a week before they started filming. The Five Nights at Freddy’s creator was reportedly grateful for their works and even exclaimed, “This is exactly what I wanted them to look like.” It wasn’t an easy job for Bennet to redo the design, but after seeing Cawthon’s reaction, he felt that all of their efforts were worthwhile.

The confusion behind Bonnie’s correct color could be due to the lighting when the first Five Nights at Freddy’s game was released, giving the character a purple-like color. FNAF fans surely noticed that all the plushies and toys linked to the Rabbit animatronic were purple. Even those who loved to wear Bonnie’s ear in cosplay used lavender.

However, it was also noticeable that Bonnie and the other bunny animatronics rocked a more bluish hue after the first design. Even Glamrock Bonnie from Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach had a noticeable light blue complexion. No matter Bonnie’s color, he remains the scariest animatronic in the franchise, probably due to his lack of eyebrows giving him a mysterious and uncanny vibe. Many gamers and fans find Bonnie the Rabbit terrifying, and that’s understandable because even the FNAF creator, Scott Cawthon, admitted that Bonnie gave him nightmares.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is now playing in theaters worldwide and streaming on Peacock.
