Fallout Fans Spot Slight Changes In International Versions Of The Trailer

Highlights

  • Both English and Japanese versions of the Fallout TV trailer feature new and different scenes.
  • The Japanese version includes a shot of a character observing a potentially significant glowing vial.
  • All versions of the trailer impressed fans, showcasing creators’ understanding of the franchise’s themes.

The Fallout TV series trailer debuted last week, and fans quickly spotted changes and extra footage in international versions of Prime Video’s preview.

Based on the video game series of the same name, Prime Video’s Fallout TV series similarly depicts a post-apocalyptic alternate-history world in which advances in nuclear technology led to a retrofuturistic society and a resource war prompted by an energy crisis. The Fallout TV series trailer introduced viewers to Ella Purnell’s Lucy, a descendent of original survivors who survived the nuclear exchange by taking refuge in fallout bunkers known as Vaults.

The Fallout TV series trailer followed Lucy as she ventured into a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, encountering hostile figures and challenges. Prime Video released multiple versions of the trailer, and fans spotted a few changes, including alternate shots and additional footage. For instance, the U.S. version of the Fallout TV series trailer features a shot of a T-60 and NCR soldier about to collide amid a battle. However, the Japanese Fallout TV series trailer replaces this shot with footage of the T-60 smashing the soldier into a table during the same battle.

The Japanese Fallout TV series includes added footage, such as a shot with a character observing a glowing vile that Twitter user @FalloutTV_YT believes could contain concentrated Forced Evolutionary Virus, an artificial virus featured in the games. There’s also a shot of Purnell’s Lucy being lassoed by a rope and seemingly about to be pulled away. Less noticeable and arguably less consequential in international versions of the Fallout TV series trailer is an extra shot of Lucy talking with the old lady in the store. Fans can only speculate about the reasons for these differences; changes between versions of the same trailer are not uncommon, as seen when the X-Men ’97 trailer on Disney Plus added an extra shot of Rogue and Gambit.

Regardless of these differences, all versions of the Fallout TV series trailer won over most fans. While the Fallout TV series tells an original story set with the same continuity as the video games (as opposed to adapting a specific game in the franchise) the trailer demonstrated that series co-creator Geneva Robertson-Dworet and executive producers Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan understand the franchise’s aesthetics and themes. If there was any doubt, the Fallout TV series’ creators had to cut plans to avoid clashing with ideas Todd Howard developed for Fallout 5, suggesting they shared a similar understanding of where the franchise could go.

With roughly a month until the Fallout TV series premieres on Prime Video, fans are undoubtedly hoping for more promotional material to confirm their faith in the show is merited. The franchise has a passionate fan base that likely hopes the Fallout TV series can join HBO’s The Last of Us, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog movies, and Chris Pratt’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie on the list of successful video game adaptations, and perhaps even exceed them.

The Fallout TV series premieres on Prime Video on April 12, 2024.
