One of the first characters to ever debut in Fairy Tail, Lucy Heartfilia is one of the series’ most recognizable characters. Having been raised in a household that turned loveless upon her mother’s death, Lucy took it upon herself to flee from home and make a life for herself as a mage, seeking to join the popular Fairy Tail guild.
Being a Celestial Spirit Mage, Lucy’s dream of joining the Fairy Tail guild came true one day when she met the Fire Dragon Slayer Natsu Dragneel. From there, she proceeded to meet a slew of new mages she could call friends while strengthening her bonds with her Celestial Spirits.
8 Flare Corona
Lucy’s Ex-Adversary
Upon their first meeting, Lucy and Flare were nothing more than rivals on the battlefield during the Grand Magic Games. Unfortunately, being a part of Guild Raven Tail, the Dark Guild counterpart to Fairy Tail, Flare tormented Lucy for the majority of their match, even attempting to brand her with the Raven Tail symbol at one point.
It was not until after Raven Tail’s disqualification and the end of the Grand Magic Games that Lucy and Flare rekindled their relationship, with Flare apologizing for her actions during her match. Though she still fixated on Lucy for a time, Lucy held no ill will toward Flare and had no problem working together with her to defeat Sylph Labyrinth during the Sun Village arc.
7 Brandish
Lucy’s Rival
Like Flare, Lucy met Brandish under very intense circumstances. In this case, Brandish overwhelmed Lucy and her friends with her immense magic power at Caracole Island in their bid to rescue Makarov. Later, when the Alvarez forces finally invade Ishgar, Brandish goes out of her way to seek out Lucy and hide in her bathtub.
During their encounter, it is revealed that Brandish held a grudge towards Lucy for her mother’s part in the murder of Brandish’s mother. However, after Aquarius takes her through the actual events of her mother’s murder, Brandish decides to let go of her grudge, but she does challenge Lucy to find Aquarius’s lost key before her.
6 Yukino Agria
Lucy’s Fellow Celestial Spirit Mage
Upon seeing her for the first time, Lucy was shocked at not only the appearance of another Celestial Spirit Mage but one that was powerful enough to open the Thirteenth Gate Ophiuchius, as seen during Yukino’s match against Kagura. Naturally, when Yukino loses her match and is subsequently kicked out of the powerful Sabertooth guild, Lucy is very concerned about Yukino’s well-being.
Throughout the second half of the Grand Magic Games arc, Lucy and Yukino are shown to fight together in the battles that ensue in the royal palace of Mercurius, with the two mages often combining the abilities of their Celestial Spirits. Their most notable feat, however, is their collaborative summoning of all of their spirits to close the Eclipse Gate to prevent more dragons from arriving in the present.
5 Cana Alberona
Lucy’s S-Class Trial Teammate
As a veteran member of the Fairy Tail guild, Cana acts as an elder sister-like figure to the other members, which naturally includes Lucy. When their rival guild Phantom Lord attacked Fairy Tail for the second time to apprehend Lucy, it was Cana who led Fairy Tail’s defense to protect Lucy and keep the guild from being destroyed.
In the Tenrou Island arc, Lucy accepts Cana’s proposition to become her partner for the trial to become an S-Class Mage. Aside from one instance of sabotage, the pair were able to help each other out both in the trial itself and the subsequent battle against Grimoire Heart. Since then, their relationship has become rather playful, with Cana frequently teasing Lucy at any chance she gets.
4 Loke
Lucy’s Strongest Celestial Spirit
While Loke has flirted with many women, he initially backed off from Lucy due to her being a Celestial Spirit Mage. It is later revealed that Loke’s true identity is that of Leo the Lion, a Celestial Spirit who harbored the guilt of killing his previous owner Karen Lilica, an action that Lucy decides to help him atone for.
After being contracted to her, Loke is far more flirtatious with Lucy and has displayed many grandiose gestures of affection for her, often to Lucy’s irritation. However, much like the rest of her Spirits, Loke’s loyalty to Lucy is second to none, and the two have worked well to fight numerous opponents, ranging from Bickslow of Fairy Tail’s Thunder God Tribe to Torafuzar of Tartaros’ Nine Demon Gates.
3 Levy McGarden
Lucy’s Fellow Bookworm
After joining the Fairy Tail guild, Lucy wasted no time in making new friends, among them being the studious Solid Script mage Levy McGarden. Due to their mutual love of books and writing, the pair developed a quick but deep friendship based on mutual respect for each other’s abilities and love for the written word.
In battle, Lucy and Levy function very well as a tactical pair, formulating brilliant plans and carrying them out to great effect. Their most notable plan is the plot to enclose Acnologia inside Fairy Sphere to stop his rampage. Before Lucy published her book at the end of the series, she had only shown her rough draft to Levy, a prime example of their faith in each other.
2 Aquarius
Lucy’s First Celestial Spirit
Aside from her mage friends, Lucy also has a great deal of camaraderie among her Celestial Spirits, but she has the distinction of having a special relationship with the Water Bearer Spirit Aquarius. As the first-ever Celestial Spirit key she received as a child, Lucy would often summon her whenever she needed someone to play with, much to Aquarius’ initial frustration.
While Aquarius constantly scolded Lucy for menial things, such as dropping her key or summoning her unnecessarily, Lucy nevertheless had full faith in Aquarius’ powerful water magic. When Lucy tearfully sacrifices Aquarius’ key to summon the Celestial Spirit King, Aquarius reaffirms her supposed hatred of Lucy, but ultimately thanks her for everything before being sent back to the Celestial Spirit World.
1 Natsu Dragneel
Lucy’s Benefactor
As the man who invited Lucy to the Fairy Tail guild, there is no question that Natsu and Lucy have one of the closest relationships in the series. Rarely seen apart from each other, the two have gone through many events of varying emotions together, ranging from crashing a shady boat party to a full-fledged war against the Alvarez Empire.
As a testament to Lucy’s absolute faith in Natsu, she was able to fling herself from her high Phantom Lord cell knowing full well that Natsu would come save her. Conversely, Natsu tremendously cares for Lucy’s safety, with the sight of her supposed corpse during the Alvarez Empire war sending him into a demonic rage.
