When the Dragon Ball Super anime went on an indefinite hiatus in 2017, it was right after the much-loved Tournament of Power arc had reached its conclusion. This arc was praised by fans and critics alike, as it showed the Z-Fighters going up against some of the strongest warriors from across the multiverse, culminating in Ultra Instinct Goku’s legendary battle against Jiren the Grey, who was the most powerful antagonist that the heroes had ever faced up till that point.
However, despite seeing how strong the other universes are, Universe 7’s current team may just be far out of everyone else’s league. Over the years, the official Dragon Ball Super manga has introduced many new transformations for the main characters that bring them to levels never heard of before and has even introduced new characters that are just as powerful. So, let’s take a look at why Universe 7’s team for the second Tournament of Power may just be too strong.
Goku’s Ultra Instinct Is Stronger Than Ever
First Appearance |
Dragon Ball Super, Episode 110, “Goku Enkindled! The Awakened One’s New Ultra Instinct!” |
---|---|
Debut Date |
October 7, 2017 |
Awakened in his incredible fight against Jiren in the Tournament of Power, Ultra Instinct is a technique of the Angels that provides the perfect defense by having the body move out of danger on its own. Though activated multiple times throughout the tournament, it wasn’t until their last fight that Goku unlocked a mastered version of the form which allowed him to defeat Jiren without breaking a sweat. After the tournament, Goku would eventually go on to master the transformation and honed his body to use Mastered Ultra Instinct perfectly.
It’s an ultimate technique that severs the consciousness from the body in order to allow the body to subconsciously move it to even attack or evade. It’s called ‘Ultra Instinct’.
Notable Feats:
In his Ultra Instinct form, he made short work of Jiren the Grey, an extremely powerful enemy who no one else could harm. After that, he mastered the form to fight against Moro, even unlocking a brand-new Spirit Avatar move that formed a massive specter of energy, which he used once more against Gas in the Granolah arc. In this arc, Mastered and True Ultra Instinct allowed Goku to fight on equal footing against both antagonists, who were each the strongest character in Universe 7 at different points.
Vegeta’s Ultra Ego Has The Power Of Gods
First Appearance |
Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 74, “Vegeta vs. Granolah” |
---|---|
Debut Date |
July 20, 2021 |
When Goku achieved Ultra Instinct, fans waited for the time when Vegeta would unlock it too, as the trend had been like this for quite a while. However, in the Granolah arc, Vegeta eventually unlocks an incredible transformation of his own, gaining the Energy of Destruction and the aura of a Destroyer God with his awesome Ultra Ego form. This form was a great addition to Vegeta’s character because it fit him perfectly due to his nature as a brawler and his strength in this form was staggering, with him using its unique attribute to get stronger with more damage that he took, prioritizing brawling instead of finesse like Ultra Instinct.
A God of Destruction taught me that power derived solely from instinct is unbounded.
Notable Feats:
The only showing of Ultra Ego thus far has been brief. However, its strength was quite apparent as Vegeta overpowered Granolah at the start of their fight, which is impressive because the latter was a character who was able to knock out Ultra Instinct Goku in one attack. After the Cerelians power up, it was revealed that the only way for him to truly defeat Vegeta is in a massive attack that would kill him too, and later on, Vegeta used this form to fight against Gas pretty well, showing how strong it truly is.
Gohan Beast Is Equal To Ultra Instinct
First Appearance |
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero |
---|---|
Debut Date |
June 11, 2022 |
The events of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie introduced a terrifying new threat in Cell Max, who was shown to be an incredibly powerful villain. Despite getting significant power-ups and the whole team of Z-Fighters working together, they still couldn’t bring the monster down until Gohan unlocked his amazing new Beast transformation. Awoken from his unmatched potential and rage, Beast swiftly dealt with Cell Max and finally answered fans’ desires to have Gohan reach the same tier of strength as Goku and Vegeta.
Is that all? I guess it’s my turn.
Notable Feats:
The only concrete evidence that fans have of Cell Max’s power is when Gohan states that he isn’t sure if even Goku or Vegeta could have beaten him, so seeing him take the monster down with a single attack tells how powerful he is. Moreover, Chapter 103 of the manga revealed the true strength of Gohan Beast, as he matched Ultra Instinct blow for blow and even took Goku by surprise with his blistering speed. Though perhaps not stronger than UI, landing such a clean hit on the form definitely puts him on the same level as it.
Orange Piccolo Is Perhaps The Strongest Namekian Ever
First Appearance |
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero |
---|---|
Debut Date |
June 11, 2022 |
Super Hero received praise for not only bringing Gohan back to relevance, but Piccolo as well. The Namekian had been left in the dust by the Saiyans, so he made a wish to Shenron to make him strong enough to compete with them, which was answered by the incredible Orange Piccolo transformation. This form was so strong that it made short work of Gamma #2 without any real effort and even went toe-to-toe against Cell Max, holding him down for Gohan to deal the finishing blow.
I turned orange? Really? I didn’t even notice. But it felt like some switch inside me got flipped, the same way it does with you.
Notable Feats:
When Gamma #2 attacked him at the start of the movie, Piccolo was easily overpowered by him, and Gamma #1’s fight against Ultimate Gohan proved that these new androids were at the same level as the Saiyan. After unlocking his orange form, Piccolo defeated Gamma #2 with just a single punch that effectively made most of the Red Ribbon Army surrender then and there. Moreover, he fought against Cell Max fairly equally for much of their bout.
Broly Can Unleash His Unrivaled Potential
First Appearance |
Dragon Ball Super: Broly |
---|---|
Debut Date |
December 14, 2018 |
Broly is more akin to a force of nature than just any other Saiyan. Due to his harsh and lonely living conditions, the only person he had ever known before the events of the movie was his father Paragus, who had brought him up with the sole purpose of bringing down the Saiyan royal family. Broly held unparalleled potential within himself, as he could raise his power to unquantified degrees and overpower pretty much anyone who faced him, though this came at the price of him losing his mind to his rage and becoming a destructive monster.
I was so sure my strength was getting close to its peak, and then this guy showed up and was so much stronger than me. And he’s a Saiyan, just like I am. He’s probably even stronger than Beerus!
Notable Feats:
In his first ever proper fight against opponents other than his father, Broly’s power rose exponentially, eventually coming to a stage where he surpassed even Goku and Vegeta’s Super Saiyan Blue transformations. These were extremely powerful forms that the Saiyans had been working to master for decades, but Broly surpassed them within a day. Though his rage has always been a problem for him, Chapter 103 sees him finally reign it in and unlock a Super Saiyan form strong enough to spar equally with Beast Gohan.
Various Others In Support Roles
The characters that have already been mentioned are the heavy hitters on the team for sure. However, the rest of Universe 7’s team would be incredibly strong and would consist of fighters who, although perhaps not as powerful as these 5, would be indispensable to the overall success of the team in various support roles. These could be:
- Granolah: Granolah proved himself to be an incredibly powerful combatant in the arc sharing his name, so much so that he, at full power, was equal to Vegeta’s Ultra Ego in strength and played a vital role with the 2 Saiyans in defeating Gas. Granolah’s role in the team could make use of his exceptional abilities as a sniper, taking out powerful enemies from afar.
- Majin Buu: Before the Tournament of Power began, it was revealed that Buu had unlocked a new form that was stronger than any of his previous ones, but he couldn’t use it because he fell asleep. Buu could lend a protective support role to Granolah as he fired from afar.
- Gotenks: Though Goten and Trunks may not be as strong as most of the other fighters on the team, having a fused Saiyan would be very useful. By perfecting their fusion, Goten and Trunks can finally have a bigger role to play in the overall story.
- The Androids: The Androids are honestly pretty weak compared to the other characters here, but having infinite energy and stamina is always a plus. Gamma #1, Android 18, and 17 could all prove to be very helpful in this tournament.
The Ultimate Wildcard
Whether or not Black Frieza would be on the team is the biggest question mark for the whole situation. If Frieza were to be on the team, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Universe 7 would leave all other universes in the dust. In fact, if Frieza saw fit to join Universe 7 once more, this team might just be strong enough to challenge the Gods of Destruction and the Divine Hierarchy itself!
However, there is no way to know what will happen until the situation presents itself within the canon story. Knowing how devious and cunning the Galactic Tyrant is, it’s not too far to assume that Frieza would somehow find his way to being on the team of a different universe, spelling real trouble for the heroes!
Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
