Dragon Ball: The New Generation of Saiyans, Explained

Highlights

  • The Universe 6 Saiyans are strong protectors from a non-warrior race, proving invaluable in the Tournament of Power.
  • Gohan’s latent potential as a Half-Saiyan surpasses even Goku and Vegeta, showcasing incredible feats of strength.
  • Trunks and Goten, both Half-Blooded Saiyans, possess formidable strength through early Super Saiyan transformations and fusion.

The Saiyans are known across the universe as the ultimate warrior race and the mere mention of them is enough to inspire fear in even the greatest of fighters. Their legacy is built on combat and battle, something that the protagonists of Dragon Ball, Goku and Vegeta, love over everything else as they continuously strive to improve themselves and get even stronger. This mindset has turned them into the strongest Saiyans in history and the de facto guardians of Universe 7.

However, they will not be around forever. Whether Dragon Ball fans see it in the series or speculate about it after it has ended, the passing of the torch is inevitable. This is where the other Saiyans come in. Since Goku and Vegeta may not always be in the best position to protect the world at all times, the next generation of Saiyans have stepped up to the position of being the universe’s protectors, so let’s take a look at who they are.

Gohan Is The Strongest Half-Blooded Saiyan

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 1, “The New Threat”

Debut Date

April 26, 1989

Strongest Form

Gohan Beast

When he was first introduced to the franchise, Gohan was quite an unassuming character. Shown as the child of Goku, who himself was very young by the time the original Dragon Ball series ended, it took everyone by surprise to see a child like him have such an incredible amount of power, as was confirmed many times throughout the franchise. However, it wasn’t until the Cell Saga that fans found out about his latent potential.

Being born a Half-Saiyan, Gohan’s potential was far greater than even that of his father and Vegeta, which allowed him to tap into seemingly endless reserves of energy which made him stronger than everyone else. This was first seen when he achieved his Super Saiyan 2 form and then again in Dragon Ball Super, where he unlocked his Gohan Beast transformation.

Gohan, listen closely! You have the potential to become the most powerful being on Earth. You need to believe in yourself and unleash that power!

Gohan’s Feats of Strength

Even when he was a child, Gohan displayed incredible strength, as was first seen when he broke out of his imprisonment in Raditz’s ship and charged at him, dealing substantial damage to his uncle. He was also a great help against Nappa and Vegeta and even played a major part in defeating Frieza’s forces. Gohan was also the first person ever to achieve Super Saiyan 2 and his Ultimate form in the Buu Saga was stronger than Super Saiyan 3 Goku. His most impressive feat was unlocking Beast Gohan, a form as powerful as Ultra Instinct.

Broly’s A Pure-Blooded Saiyan On Goku And Vegeta’s Level

images/news/2024/4/16/dragon-ball-new-generation-saiyans-explained_2.jpg

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Debut Date

December 14, 2018

Strongest Form

Full Power Super Saiyan/Legendary Super Saiyan

Although Broly was first introduced in 1993 in a non-canon movie, the imposing nature of his power remained the same when he finally became a canon character in 2018. In both cases, he was a Saiyan born with an extraordinary amount of power, to the point where his power level as an infant was higher than that of many adult Saiyans, which led to his banishment from Planet Vegeta.

Broly would spend his entire life in isolation along with his father, who trained him from birth to be the ultimate destructive weapon. However, the canon version was a far more sympathetic character who eventually joined the Z-Fighters as an ally, and although he technically belongs to the same generation as Goku and Vegeta, he is a newer character who has only recently gained control of his powers, and the series may be alluding to him joining Gohan as the next most important duo in Dragon Ball.

Such pure power… Unlike any of the Super Saiyan forms I’ve seen!

Broly’s feats of strength

Broly’s potential may be greater than that of even Gohan due to the fact that he was able to grow far stronger than both Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta in his very first proper fight. Since he only ever sparred against his father, he never learned to control his full power, because of which he lost control and became so powerful that only Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta could defeat him. In Chapter 103 of the manga, he finally gains control of his rage, letting him go Super Saiyan at will and in doing so, becomes as strong as Gohan Beast.

Trunks Has Amazing Power Within Him

images/news/2024/4/16/dragon-ball-new-generation-saiyans-explained_3.jpg

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 119, “The Mysterious Youth”

Debut Date

December 4, 1991

Strongest Form

Super Saiyan (Trunks) – Super Saiyan Rage (Future Trunks) – Super Saiyan 3 (Gotenks)

Trunks is the son of Vegeta and, just like Gohan, is a Half-Blooded Saiyan who holds a great amount of potential. This potential is what allowed him to be a formidable fighter and perform really well in the World Martial Arts Tournament, where he and Goten fought equally. Though his regular version hasn’t fought all that much within the series, he remains a powerful Saiyan.

Future Trunks is the version of the Saiyan that the world was first introduced to and was far stronger. This was mostly due to having grown up in a time of war under the tutelage of Future Gohan, while the younger version grew up in a relatively peaceful time when his father and Goku took care of every threat that appeared. Losing his loved ones to the Androids made Future Trunks a hardened warrior who achieved Super Saiyan early on.

You hate the fact that you’re powerless to stop me. That you’re completely outmatched. Well, imagine feeling the way you do now all of the time like the people of this planet do. Fools. How do you think my master Gohan felt when you ganged up on him in the rain and he had no way out? Well, not it’s your turn. And I hope that you enjoy it.

Trunks’ Feats of Strength

In the Buu Saga, Trunks trained with Vegeta in the gravity room. Here, Trunks demonstrates the ability to go Super Saiyan at a very early age, surprising even Vegeta. Future Trunks was a great help in the fight against the modern-day Androids and Cell, even powering up enough to go to the past and defeat the future ones on his own. He was even strong enough to defeat Dabura and Babidi to prevent the release of Majin Buu and even helped Goku and Vegeta defeat Zamasu and Goku Black.

Goten’s Strength Is Formidable

images/news/2024/4/16/dragon-ball-new-generation-saiyans-explained_4.jpg

First Appearance

Dragon Ball Z, Episode 201, “I am Saiyaman”

Debut Date

September 15, 1993

Strongest Form

Super Saiyan (Goten) – Super Saiyan 3 (Gotenks)

Much like his best friend Trunks, Goten is yet another Half-Blooded Saiyan who owes a lot of his strength to his genetics. In the franchise, he has mostly been shown as a child who gets up to silly antics with Trunks, so there haven’t been many instances where his strength was on full display. Just like his best friend, Goten was able to transform into a Super Saiyan at a very early age, and he performed fusion with Trunks to fuse into Gotenks.

Hey, I think there’s a little me hiding behind your leg, Chi-Chi!

Goten’s Feats of Strength

Goten and Trunks are always seen together when they need to battle, as was the case in the Buu Saga, where they fused into Gotenks and performed very well against Buu. Once they were Gotenks, they were powerful enough to transform into Super Saiyan 3, which proved to be very effective when they were fighting Super Buu, and upon absorbing them, Super Buu became stronger than Ultimate Gohan. Though they haven’t done much in Dragon Ball Super, they were an essential addition when it came to bringing down Cell Max.

The Universe 6 Saiyans Are Dangerous

images/news/2024/4/16/dragon-ball-new-generation-saiyans-explained_5.jpg

The Saiyans from Universe 6 are quite competent, though not as powerful as their Universe 7 counterparts. This is mostly because Planet Sadala still exists and the Saiyans within it are not a warrior race, rather they serve as protectors for those who cannot help themselves. The first one of these Saiyans that fans were introduced to was Cabba, who was fairly weak since he, nor anyone else of his race, could even transform into a Super Saiyan.

However, he, Kale, and Caulifla proved themselves to be valuable assets to their overall team in the Tournament of Power, unlocking many new and powerful transformations and eliminating several powerful combatants. These Saiyans were probably the biggest reason why Universe 6 performed as well as it did, and though they don’t belong to Universe 7, they remain a part of the next generation of Saiyans.

Master, I shall fight without forgetting my pride as a Saiyan!

Universe 6 Saiyan’s Feats of Strength

Cabba achieved his Super Saiyan form in the Universe 6 Tournament Arc after being baited by Vegeta into doing so. After that, he made a far better showing. In the Tournament of Power, Kale unlocked her Berserker Form, which did fairly well against Goku and others in the tournament, and eventually, she fused with Caulifla to form Kefla, the strongest member of the entire Universe 6 team, who gave Ultimate Gohan a run for his money in the manga and stood up to UI Omen Goku in the anime.

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
