There was a time when Dragon Ball used to be an adventure manga with a smattering of fights scattered here and there. The evolution of this series into a battle-focused shonen manga with incredible powerups and moves is fascinating to witness, with the many combatants in the series showcasing a wealth of powerful moves to turn the tide of battle in a flash.
In fact, some of the moves that the fighters in the series whip out are so powerful that the ki they drain can be staggering. Most of the characters in Dragon Ball try to reserve these moves for when the time is right; otherwise, they can find themselves in a tough spot if these attacks whiff, and they have nothing left in the tank anymore.
6 Special Beam Cannon
A Powerful Technique That Requires Sufficient Time And Power To Charge
- User(s): Piccolo, Son Gohan
The Special Beam Cannon is one of the most powerful moves in Dragon Ball, and seeing Gohan whip this move out at the end of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero to pay homage to the man who mentored him and served as a second father is a moment of pure and utter joy.
There was a time when this move took a long time to change and drained a lot of Piccolo’s energy. While he’s become powerful enough to whip out this attack without kicking up too much of a fuss, this doesn’t mean that he can unleash multiple Special Beam Cannons with ease. After a while, he’s bound to run out of energy, making it more important to space out this attack and only use it when it will surely land a hit.
5 Final Flash
A Powerful Beam Attack That Vegeta Charges Up To Use With Great Aplomb
- User(s): Vegeta
After letting Cell reach his Perfect form, Vegeta realizes just how out of his depth he really is. Despite his strongest blows, Perfect Cell barely gets a scratch on him. Not wanting to engage in a losing battle, Vegeta decides to whip out a new beam attack he perfected during the time he spent training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
What follows is one of the most destructive beam attacks in Dragon Ball history, with Vegeta putting in his all to unleash the patented Final Flash. This attack even takes Perfect Cell by surprise, who has to dodge at the final second to not be obliterated. Vegeta adds this move to his repertoire and uses it from time to time, but he always ensures not to waste a shot. After all, even after all this time, the Final Flash takes a lot of ki and isn’t something he can just whip out all the time.
4 Evil Containment Wave
A Sealing Technique So Powerful That Users Without Sufficient Stamina May Perish
- User(s): Master Mutaito, Master Roshi, Tien Shinhan, Kami, Piccolo, Goku, Future Trunks, Future Mai, Frost, Captain Oniyu, Yamcha
The Evil Containment Wave is a technique used time and time again, and fans were glad to see this move make a comeback in Dragon Ball Super across two arcs. One thing that is consistent about this technique is the toll it takes on the human body, with Master Roshi using all his energy to trap the many fighters who try to take him out during the Tournament of Power.
What most people aren’t aware of is that this technique can outright kill a person if they use it when they don’t have enough stamina. This makes it important to avoid using this technique in such a situation, even if the Dragon Balls can bring someone back from the afterlife.
3 Cage Of Light
A Souped-up Version Of The Death Beam Golden Frieza Uses To Aid Gohan In The Tournament Of Power
- User(s): Frieza
To this day, it’s odd to see a tyrant like Frieza help out the heroes, even if it may be to satisfy his own selfish goals. His Golden Frieza form is a treat to witness, letting him whip out powerful moves that can turn the tide of battle in a flash. One such move comes in the form of the Cage of Light, a variation on this Death Beam technique that shoots out multiple lasers to form a cage that restricts movement.
He uses this to nullify the advantage of Dyspo’s speed, letting Gohan fight him and turn the tide of battle. During this technique, Frieza outright states the toll this technique takes on his body, which is saying something given how Frieza’s ego generally prevents him from admitting these weaknesses unless he’s pushed into a corner.
2 Kaio-ken
Augment’s Goku’s Strength At The Cost Of Wreaking Havoc On His Body
- User(s): Goku
To call the Kaio-ken move an attack would be a stretch, but there’s no denying that he’s used this move in bursts to augment his powers and land attacks that hit for immense damage. Plus, the well-documented effects this powerup has on the user’s body can be seen in brutal ways Goku’s muscles spasm after pushing his body to the limit.
It’s important to use this technique sparingly and not rely on it too much since Goku’s body will turn into a pain-wracked mess. Watching him re-introduce this form by combining it with the Super Saiyan Blue transformation was a treat to witness, making his fight with Hit one of the biggest highlights of Dragon Ball Super.
1 Tri-Beam
Drains A User’s Life Energy To Deliver A Devastating Attack
- User(s): Tien Shinhan
The Tri-Beam is one of the most powerful techniques in Dragon Ball history, used by Tien time and time again to turn the tide of battle against the strongest foes around. The fact that he managed to corner Cell by repeatedly using this move to buy some time shows that, even after all the powerups that other characters have enjoyed, he can still stand alongside his friends to save the universe.
However, the Tri-Beam actively drains a user’s life force if they use it too many times without any regard for their well-being. A great example of the same can be seen when Tien uses this attack after being enraged by Chiaotzu’s death, landing a damaging blow on Nappa at the cost of his life.
