Dempsey is best known for his role in Grey’s Anatomy as Dr Derek ‘McDreamy’ Shepherd. Dempsey’s casting in Dexter: Original Sin is his first full time American television role since he left the medical drama in 2015. Dempsey’s most recent television appearance was in the Sky Original Italian drama, Devils, which ran for two seasons between 2020 and 2022.
Who is Aaron Spencer in Dexter: Original Sin?
Patrick Dempsey’s new role in Dexter: Original Sin was met with delight by fans of the actor, as well as the loyal Dexter fan base. Dempsey will play Aaron Spencer, who is the captain of the homicide division of the Miami Metro Police Department. It is a pivotal role that is bound to provide the experienced actor with some interesting storylines.
According to reports, Dempsey’s character has connections to the Morgan family. Apparently, Captain Spencer has a decades-long friendship with Harry Morgan, who will be played by Christian Slater. Like Dempsey, Spencer is in his 50s, and the storyline looks set to see him trying to assemble a top-class investigative team to look into the abduction of a prominent judge’s son, while dealing with a personal crisis of his own.
Fans will be eager to see where the inexperienced forensics intern and budding serial killer, Dexter Morgan, will fit into this particular storyline. There was no mention of Aaron Spencer in the original Dexter series, so he either moved on in his career, or maybe he ended up dead. Dempsey’s casting is a pivotal one, as Dexter: Original Sin needs to create great new characters to add stakes to the overall narrative.
Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios, Chris McCarthy, released a statement after Dempsey’s casting:
Patrick Dempsey is a beloved actor who is internationally known for the iconic characters he has played and his performances. We are thrilled to have him join our all-star cast of Dexter: Original Sin, the highly anticipated origin story of the franchise.
What other projects might Patrick Dempsey have lined up in the near future?
Patrick Dempsey is one of the busiest actors around in Hollywood at the moment. Before he was cast in Dexter: Original Sin, there had been rumors that he could be set to return to a franchise he originally appeared in nearly 25 years ago. Dempsey played Detective Mark Kincaid in Scream 3 back in 2000, and was a fan favorite, after he helped Sidney, Dewey and Gale defeat Roman Bridger’s Ghostface killer.
Despite Kincaid’s popularity with the fan base, this was the last time he was seen in the long-running horror franchise. However, in Scream (2022), it was revealed the iconic final girl, Sidney Prescott, had married Mark Kincaid off-screen and had three children with him, which raised speculation that he might return to play the character in a future installment.
Scream 6 moved away from the character of Sidney Prescott, due to Neve Campbell’s pay dispute with Spyglass, but Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega exits from Scream 7 led to Neve Campbell signing on to play Sidney Prescott once again in the upcoming sequel. This fueled rumors that Patrick Dempsey’s storyline in Scream 7 could be featured. Despite these rumors, Dempsey hasn’t officially signed on for Scream 7, and fans are concerned that his upcoming role in Dexter: Original Sin could put his return to the horror franchise in jeopardy.
Regular Scream content creator, Beyond The Mask, stated that a rumor was circulating about Dempsey’s possible lack of involvement in Scream 7.
It’s possible that Patrick Dempsey may NOT be returning for Scream 7 afterall.
It’s a fair comment to make that Dempsey might not return in Scream 7, but there’s also every chance that he’ll be done filming on Dexter: Original Sin, before Scream 7 begins filming later this year. It is pivotal Dempsey does return in Scream 7, as Sidney’s family are set to be the focus of the upcoming sequel.
In addition to his rumored possible return to the Scream franchise, Dempsey looks set to reprise the role of Sheriff Eric Newlon in Eli Roth’s upcoming Thanksgiving sequel. Newlon was revealed to be the killer in Thanksgiving, and the ambiguous ending left it open for Dempsey’s return in the sequel. Interestingly, Spyglass owns the rights to both the Thanksgiving and Scream franchises, making Dempsey’s return very likely in both series. As for now, fans are eager to see what nuances Dempsey can bring to the role of Captain Aaron Spencer in the Dexter prequel series.
