Sabito was a skilled and talented Demon slayer who was trained under the guidance of Sakonji Urokodaki (a former Demon Slayer Corps member and the former water Hashira) along with Makomo on Mt. Fujikasane. During his final selection, Sabito defeated many demons until he came across a uniquely powerful demon known as the Hand Demon, who had killed many of Sabito’s fellow demon slayers.
Sabito along with Makomo were also tragically killed during the battle with the Hand Demon, sacrificing themselves, so their peers could escape. After the incident, their souls could not rest because of their failed attempt to defeat the demon and also Sakonji’s sadness at losing the two talented Demon Slayers he had trained.

The Ghost Apprentice
Sabito first appears to Tanjiro as he is training to take part in the final selections,frustrated with his lack of progress Tanjiro hits his head on the boulder. Sabito then states that Tanjiro is slow and weak while proceeding to attack him, while assessing his strength. When Sabito beckons Tanjiro to train with him with a wooden sword, Tanjiro expresses his fear of harming Sabito, Sabito however disregards the fact that Tanjiro could harm him at his current skill level. Unable to even lay a finger on Sabito, Tanjiro tries everything to land a hit on him but fails to do so. Sabito asserts his dominance as the stronger swordsman and reveals his prior accomplishment of slicing a boulder in half. Using his speed and agility, Sabito bounces off trees confusing Tanjiro and attacking him at the same time, Tanjiro is unable to keep up and is easily defeated. Sabito explains that in order for Tanjiro to get stronger her would need to remember the valuable teachings from master Sakonji and to ingrain it in his mind. This part of the Tanjiro’s journey to becoming more powerful is a pivotal moment, pushing him to dig deeper and evolve his skills in order to become a stronger Demon Slayer.
Thanks to Sabito’s mentorship, emotional support and guidance, Tanjiro was able to overcome his self-doubt and frustrations and managed to up his skill level. Sabito and Makomo had an impactful presence in the life of Tanjiro, he carried their legacy within him and used it as a source of inspiration and determination in the fight against the Hand Demon. The emotional connection which was developed between the characters highlighted the themes of perseverance and determination, and the fight to avenge the evil that was destroying the lives of many innocent people. After learning about the deaths of the thirteen students who trained under Sakonji, Tanjiro converted that sadness into rage and rushes in for the attack during the battle with the Hand Demon. At one point, Makomo question Sabito on Tanjiro’s chances in defeating the Hand Demon as the two of them both lost even though they had given it their all, but Sabito is quick to remind her that Tanjiro managed to slice one of the hardest and biggest boulders around.

Vengeance Is Sweet
During the battle against Hand Demon, Tanjiro remembers the mistake Sabito made of being too reckless which resulted in his death and controls himself. While in control, Tanjiro is able to execute a water breathing technique that allows him to severe the head of the Hand Demon, defeating it once and for all. By killing the Hand Demon, Tanjiro had freed the souls of the dead as they could finally rest in peace, including Sabito and Makomo’s. Sabito saw the true potential Tanjiro possessed and chose him to become his successor. An integral part of the episode is right before Tanjiro bids farewell to Sakonji to attend the final selection, he asks Sakonji to say hello to Sabito and Makomo from him, this shocks Sakonji as the two had passed a long time ago, but this meant that Tanjiro never realized Sabito and Makomo were actually spirits guiding him all along.
