Hashiras are the strongest members of the Demon Slayer Corps, who lead their inexperienced and comparatively unskilled comrades in the fight against demons. Although many swordsmen pass the Final Selection to become demon slayers, very few manage to survive the ruthless missions that follow to eventually earn the coveted title of Hashira.
The current generation of demon slayers is no different, as some promising swordsmen appear to have what it takes to eventually lead the Demon Slayer Corps as its highest-ranked combatants. Here are some characters in Demon Slayer who would make great Hashira with the right guidance, support, and patience.
5 Inosuke Hashibira
The Confrontational Demon Slayer Who Wears His Heart On His Sleeve
Unlike his friends, who were trained by Hashiras before they took the Final Selection exam, Inosuke Hashibira was not as fortunate, and was instead raised by wild boars. Forced to learn on his own, he took inspiration from his upbringing and instincts to develop Beast Breathing. Inosuke’s rough life made him a confrontational demon slayer who loves to push himself to his limits.
Don’t dwell on such weak thoughts. You can or you can’t, it doesn’t do you any good to sit there, wondering about the maybes! Everything that dies returns to the Earth but crying won’t bring any of them back, so no matter how frustrated you feel, don’t cry. Even if you think you’re wretched and unworthy, you must keep on living.
Inosuke has fought some formidable enemies, like Gyutaro, Daki, and the members of the Shadow Family. In the Infinity Castle and the Sunrise Countdown arcs, he fights the Demon King himself after going against one of the most intimidating members of the Twelve Kizuki. Hashibira has demonstrated time and time again that he is a serious swordsman who will put his life on the line. His bravery and confrontational attitude would have made him a great Hashira.
4 Kanao Tsuyuri
The Incredibly Talented Shinobu’s Tsuguko
Kanao had the misfortune of being born into an abusive family. From a young age, she had to endure such extreme parental neglect that it led to emotional stunting. Although she was rescued by the Kocho sisters and brought to the Butterfly Mansion, the far-reaching consequences of the trauma she endured followed her for years. Kanao was unable to make decisions of her own volition, and had to be instructed to do even the most basic tasks. It was Kanae who gave her some autonomy by convincing her to toss a coin to make decisions in her life.
Although Kanao’s psychological healing was slow, she was luckily guided on the right path by the Kocho sisters at all times. Despite the challenges, Tsuyuri not only became a demon slayer, but was selected by Shinobu as her Tsuguko. Interestingly, Kanao also learned Flower Breathing without any formal instruction just by observing Kanae, which proves that she is surprisingly smart.
Rising in spite of all the hardships, Kanae eventually became an important member of the Demon Slayer Corps who goes on to fight against the Upper-Rank Two Doma and the Demon King Muzan Kibutsuji in the Final Battle arc. Her achievements are a testament to her indomitable spirit and inspiring personality – two traits that would have made her a great Hashira.
3 Zenitsu Agatsuma
Protégé Of The Former Thunder Hashira Jigoro Kuwajima
Zenitsu is an overanxious and cowardly member of the Demon Slayer Corps who, unlike his friends, struggles to find any motivation to fight demons. In fact, he is not even ashamed to confess that he is afraid of losing his life in combat and, instead of training, is more interested in finding a suitable match. On the surface, Zenitsu seems like the worst possible swordsman to earn the title of a demon slayer, so is expecting him to be a Hashira an even worse idea?
Agatsuma undoubtedly fails to display courage or commitment when he is initially assigned a mission. His cries for help before he confronts demons are surely unbecoming of a demon slayer, but when the going gets tough and victory appears out of grasp, Zenitsu goes into a deep slumber, awakening the master swordsman within. He unleashes such a frightening talent in times of desperation that he even shocks the most dangerous demons.
Zenitsu has played a pivotal role for the Demon Slayer Corps during the battle against the Spider Family on Mount Natagumo, and Gyutaro and Daki in the Entertainment district. His experience has shaped him to be the demon slayer that he is now and, despite his shortcomings, he is still one of the most talented swordsmen of his generation. Zenitsu’s eccentric nature, coupled with a mastery of a single skill, would have qualified him to be an interesting Hashira who the next generation could look up to.
2 Sabito
The Talented Swordsman Who Never Became A Demon Slayer
One of Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka’s closest friends, Sabito was a talented swordsman with immense talent. He trained under Sakonji Urokodaki, along with Giyu, and outperformed all his peers. When it was finally time for the two friends to take the Final Selection exam, Sabito showed remarkable skill and killed every demon he encountered while saving other participants at the same time. Unfortunately, things took a tragic turn for him when he encountered the Hand Demon and lost his life.
“All you’ve done with your training is memorize the information. Your body still has no clue what it needs to do. What the hell have you been up to for the past year and a half? All of it has to be hammered into your flesh! More. More! More!! You have to make sure you never forget any of the secrets Urokodaki taught you! Pound it into the marrow of your bones!”
Unable to overcome the failure during Final Selection, Sabito’s soul returned to Mount Sagiri and stayed there until he crossed paths with Tanjiro. At the time, Kamado was desperate to complete Sakonji’s training so that he could participate in the Final Selection. It was Sabito who ended up helping him, and Tanjiro went on to kill the Hand Demon, avenging the deaths of Sakonji’s fallen children.
Following the Hand Demon’s death, Sabito finally found peace and his soul disappeared into the mist, never to return to the mortal world again. In the Hashira Training arc, Giyu confessed to Tanjiro that he felt that Sabito would have been a better candidate to be the Water Hashira. The swordsmanship and uncanny talent developed by Sabito at such a young age demonstrated that Giyu was probably right about him.
1 Tanjiro Kamado
Tanjiro Has All The Traits To Be A Great Hashira
Tanjiro’s journey as a demon slayer commenced under tragic circumstances. After his family was butchered and his sister was turned into a demon, he was driven by a desire for vengeance, which matured into a hope to establish a peaceful world. On his path, he faced many unexpected challenges and hurdles that pushed him to either evolve or perish.
Despite the odds, Tanjiro managed to thrive and consistently improve as a swordsman. His experiences have equipped him with a unique perspective on fighting against demons. Having played a major role in defeating some of the most powerful beings in existence, Tanjiro can handle fighting anyone. His drive and indomitable spirit together make him a relentless warrior who will fight for the greater good despite the risks to his well-being. Courage, selflessness, and resilience are some of the traits of a successful Hashira, and Tanjiro has them all in spades.
