Deadpool and Wolverine cast list rumors continue dropping just days before the film’s theatrical release. The latest rumor involves an Oscar-winning actor who previously rejected Marvel Studios’ offer for a different role in one of the MCU’s most successful franchises.
The Deadpool and Wolverine cast is rumored to include several actors from past Marvel films produced by 20th Century Fox before Disney acquired the company. While some of these cameos have been confirmed by the Deadpool and Wolverine trailers, others, like Taylor Swift’s speculated role as Dazzler, have seemingly been debunked. Deadpool variants are also expected to appear in the film, and there are big names allegedly to at least two of them.
The Cosmic Circus’ Alex P. posted a Tweet implying Matthew McConaughey plays Cowboy Deadpool in Deadpool and Wolverine. The Twitter post featured a GIF of McConaughey saying his iconic, “Alright, Alright, Alright,” line during an interview on CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. In the post, Alex P. wrote, “Anyways, back to business,” with cowboy and skull and crossbones emojis, which fans interpreted as confirmation of McConaughey’s role as Cowboy Deadpool. After someone claimed Alex P. wasn’t saying McConaughey plays Cowboy Deadpool, the scooper responded with a subsequent Twitter post, writing, “It’s what I implied. So yes, he is.”
Alex P. also quoted a GIF of Blake Lively that he posted in early July. In the Quote Tweet, Alex P. included the woman emoji alongside the skull and crossbones emoji, implying Lively will play Lady Deadpool. A female Deadpool variant has been teased in Deadpool and Wolverine previews, but the actor behind the role has yet to be officially announced. Lively and Swift have long been rumored contenders for the role, as Lively is married to Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds and Swift is friends with the couple.
While it wouldn’t be surprising if Lively or Swift (possibly both) appear in Deadpool and Wolverine, McConaughey’s casting would arguably be a casting coup for Marvel Studios. McConaughey was approached to play Ego the Living Planet in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, he turned down the opportunity, telling Playboy that while he loved the first film, he’d “feel like an amendment” by joining the sequel. Ego the Living Planet, Star-Lord’s villainous biological father, was played by Kurt Russell.
Of course, official sources have not confirmed or denied McConaughey and Lively’s casting in Deadpool and Wolverine. With so many Deadpool and Wolverine rumors, there’s a solid chance at least a few aren’t true. There’s only a week left before the film hits theaters, so fans will likely have to wait until Deadpool and Wolverine‘s theatrical debut to find out for themselves. Anticipation for the film is palpable, as fans hope Deadpool and Wolverine can end Marvel Studios’ recent string of critical and box office flops.
Deadpool and Wolverine will be released in theaters on July 26, 2024.
