Daredevil: Born Again will mark Charlie Cox’s return to the MCU as the lead character after being relegated to cameos and guest appearances since the Netflix series ended. New fan art imagines what it could look like if Cox’s Daredevil dons a comic-accurate costume for his comeback.
Netflix’s Daredevil series captivated audiences with its gritty and violent storytelling, which hadn’t been common in most Marvel projects, at the time, particularly those in the MCU. However, the series was canceled after three seasons, along with the rest of Netflix’s original Marvel shows, and fans were left to wonder if Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and the rest of the Defenders were part of the MCU or existed in some corner of the multiverse. With appearances in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk, Echo, and the forthcoming Daredevil: Born Again, it appears Cox’s Matt Murdock and some of his cohorts are officially part of the MCU, and some fans are hoping they will return with more comic-accurate looks.
Digital artist @artoftimetravel has created an image featuring Cox’s Daredevil in a suit that more closely resembles the outfits worn by the character in Marvel Comics. The Netflix version of Daredevil’s costume was a suit of armor with a nose guard and notably excluded the classic Daredevil symbol. Cox’s Daredevil wore a yellow and red costume for his appearance in She-Hulk, but the armor outfit still lacked the Daredevil symbol. The artwork by @artoftimetravel features material that resembles Daredevil’s comic book suit, removes the mask’s nose guard and finally gives Matt Murdock the iconic “DD” symbol on his chest.
Reactions to the artwork in the post’s comments section were largely positive. While Daredevil: Born Again set photos and videos reveal Cox’s suit will be reminiscent of the Netflix armor, at least one fan hopes Marvel Studios will eventually introduce a comic-accurate costume. “I wanna force them to remake the suit into this going forward. It’s perfect,” wrote @jph_photoshop. However, many argued that the violence faced by Cox’s Daredevil necessitates body armor, though one user offered a solution to appease fans who want realism and comic book accuracy. “He still needs armor, but it can be subtle Kevlar underneath his chest emblem and some subtle body armor underneath the rest of his upper torso,” proposed @new52flash.
While there’s no indication that Daredevil: Born Again will introduce a new costume for Matt Murdock, it isn’t outside the realm of possibility. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will wear his yellow mask and outfit for the first time in Deadpool 3, and, as previously mentioned, Cox’s Matt Murdock was given the classic yellow and red costume for his guest appearance in She-Hulk. Marvel Studios has a history of providing its characters with costumes that resemble those seen in the comics, even if there were some modifications to ensure they translated well on screen. So, fans shouldn’t give up hope of seeing Cox’s Daredevil with the classic “DD” symbol.
Daredevil: Born Again is scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus in March 2025.
