Denji transforms into Chainsaw Man.
Joining the Public Safety Devil Hunters, Denji, alongside Aki and Power, a fiend, faces various challenges and supernatural threats. While all the Devil Hunters end up moving into Aki’s apartment, with him acting as caregiver, the relationship between Denji and Power is an interesting one. While the relationship between Denji and Power started off cantankerous, the relationship grows in the first season. But why is it important to the series as a whole?
Who is Denji?
At the beginning of Chainsaw Man, Denji is introduced as a brash, financially struggling teenager with a dash of naivety. His father’s demise saddles him with the burden of the debt, and in a desperate attempt to alleviate some of the financial strain, Denji makes a harrowing choice. The visible consequences of this decision manifest in an eye patch covering his right eye, symbolizing the sacrifice of his organs — his kidney, testicle, and the aforementioned eye.
Denji dies at the hands of the yakuza’s deal with the Zombie Devil. However, fate takes a twisted turn as Denji forms a life-altering contract with Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil. This pact triggers a radical transformation, transcending mere resurrection. Denji undergoes a complete physical overhaul, his emaciated frame replaced by a more robust, muscular form.
As Chainsaw Man, Denji’s revival is marked by the reappearance of his lost organs, and he emerges from a malnourished state to a revitalized existence. The visual testament to this transformation is striking—chainsaw cords protrude from his chest, and chainsaws extend menacingly from his arms and head, embodying the fusion of the human and devilish elements that define his newfound identity.
Who is Power?
Power, a member of Makima’s special squad in the Public Safety Devil Hunters, is a Blood Fiend. Fiends are devils that have taken over a person’s corpse as a last resort to survive. Initially, Power boasts about her superiority as a Fiend, showing little loyalty to humans or devils and expressing a willingness to join whichever side is winning. She revels in the thrill of combat, often showcasing her strength to prove her dominance, like when she excitedly faces an army of zombies and challenges Denji to watch her defeat them single-handedly.
Despite her egotistical nature, Power lacks true loyalty and frequently abandons plans when situations become unfavorable. Her selfish tendencies start to change when she experiences compassion for the first time, particularly towards her pet Meowy. This newfound empathy prompts her to take action when Meowy is kidnapped, marking a moment where Power shows care for someone other than herself.
Initially, Power and Denji had a rocky relationship, with Power being entirely willing to trick and sacrifice Denji to the Bat Devil for Meowy’s sake. However, after Denji saves Power and Meowy, they begin living together at Aki Hayakawa’s home and develop a more amicable relationship. They often bicker and become annoyed with one another, causing trouble for Aki as a pair. Power eventually develops a strong affection for Denji, even going so far as to deny Makima’s wishes and put her own life on the line to keep him safe. Power considers Denji to be her very first friend and values him highly. As mentioned by Makima, Power became a sister figure to Denji, and the two often bicker like siblings.
The relationship between Denji and Power becomes a central element, serving as a catalyst for various challenges and providing insights into Power’s evolving character. Throughout the first season and without delving into manga spoilers, their connection is pivotal for several reasons.
Power and Denji Understand Being Lonely
The world of Chainsaw Man is one of isolation and danger, where humans coexist with devils, and trust is rare. Denji and Power’s companionship becomes a source of solace in this environment. They understand each other’s pain and loneliness, providing a rare connection in a world where alliances can be fleeting, or at most times, non-existent.
They Help Each Other Get Stronger
Denji, as Chainsaw Man, possesses formidable physical strength and abilities, while Power brings her own unique skills to the table. Their partnership is not just emotional but practical, as they complement each other in facing challenges presented by devils and other threats. Through intense training with Kishibe, Denji and Power grew stronger and formed a closer relationship.
Denji Overcomes Prejudices
Denji, initially prejudiced against devils, learns to see beyond stereotypes through his relationship with Power, a devil herself. This growth showcases the power of their connection to challenge and overcome societal prejudices.
They Become a Family
Denji’s sole family figure was his father, who passed away, leaving him burdened with yakuza debt. Pochita, literally becoming Denji’s heart, became his newfound family. On the other hand, Power’s only companion was Meowy. Through cohabitating with Aki, both Denji and Power experience a profound shift in their understanding of love and friendship. The trio, consisting of Denji, Aki, and Power, gradually forges a surrogate family. Shared moments of joy, laughter, and camaraderie create an atmosphere conducive to personal growth. Their shared living arrangements contribute to their evolution, not just as individuals, but also as a collective.
From a turbulent beginning, Denji and Power’s relationship transforms into a familial bond, infusing Chainsaw Man with emotional depth. Their journey, marked by shared growth and the formation of a surrogate family with Aki, introduces a beacon of light in the dark and perilous world they inhabit. This evolution in their connection serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of genuine relationships, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos of Chainsaw Man.
