Bosch: Legacy- Who is Reina Vasquez?

Bosch: Legacy is Amazon Freevee’s signature show, and it debuted on the ad-based platform back in 2022, after the original Bosch series streamed on Prime Video. The spin-off series features a mixture of new and returning characters, with Titus Welliver taking the lead again as Harry Bosch, who is a now a private investigator after leaving the LAPD. Two seasons have streamed on the platform thus far, with a renewal for Season 3 already getting the go ahead before the second season aired, showing Amazon’s continued investment in the Bosch universe.

Bosch: Legacy primarily focuses on three main co-leads: Titus Welliver as private investigator Harry Bosch, Mimi Rogers as defense lawyer Honey Chandler, and Madison Lintz as LAPD rookie cop Maddie Bosch. There are still some familiar faces from the police department who appear in the show, largely down to Maddie Bosch crossing paths with them as she has joined the LAPD as a rookie cop.

In addition to familiar characters, the show introduced two new characters into the mix when the spin-off launched in 2022. These included Stephen A. Chang as hacker Maurice ‘Mo’ Bassi and Sanchez as Reina Vasquez. The latter of these two, Officer Reina Vasquez, is Maddie Bosch’s training officer who introduces her to the harsh realities of the LAPD. Vasquez is a brand-new character to the Bosch: Legacy universe, and she has quickly become a fan favorite.

Reina Vasquez is the no-nonsense cop who acts as Maddie Bosch’s training officer in Bosch: Legacy, and she’s tough on Maddie at the start to get her prepared for life in the LAPD.

I don’t care if you’re a legacy and I don’t care if your father solved a thousand murders. You’re a boot. You don’t even know what you don’t know. This is life and death. You do your job right, or you get the f**k out of my car.

Despite Vasquez’s tough attitude, Maddie gets to grips with the new job quickly and Vasquez warms to her. They become inseparable, backing each other up in some tough situations on the streets of Los Angeles. Vasquez is very much in the background during the first season of Bosch: Legacy, but she comes to the fore in season two, when she provides vital information to help with the search for Maddie when she is kidnapped.

Later, Vasquez joins the Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) and recommends Maddie for a job when she returns to duty after the Kurt Dockweiler ordeal, keeping these two characters together. Maddie confides in Vasquez, telling her she isn’t sleeping well and wants to move out of her father’s apartment and have her own space after the ordeal she suffered.

Vasquez and Maddie’s first job on the CRU is a case near The Chinese Theater, looking into crimes against tourists. Maddie spots a suspicious man in a hoodie and chases him down. She is very heavy-handed, which Vasquez notices, and later advises her not to lose control in situations like that.

Maddie tells Vasquez that she can see herself following in her father’s footsteps, with the consequences being a mixture of good and bad. Vasquez backs Maddie up again when a tracker on her father’s location leads them to a marina. Vasquez tells Maddie to stay in sight as they investigate the scene, but Maddie goes her own way, and ends up shooting Lexi Parks’ killer, Ellis, before he can kill her father.

There is a lot more to come from Reina Vasquez in Bosch: Legacy season 3, and there’s a much-needed subplot that needs to be explored that delves into her character and who she really is. She’s been on the sidelines in the first two seasons, being a support for Maddie in her early days in the LAPD, but she’s earned her place in the Bosch: Legacy world, and fans want to see more of her moving forward.

Denise G. Sanchez is a relative newcomer to the industry, with her role as Reina Vasquez in Bosch: Legacy being her biggest role to date. Prior to this role, she had recurring roles on FX’s Mayans MC as Alicia, and The Good Place, where she was credited as Denise Sanchez.

She had a string of one-episode guest starring roles on shows including General Hospital, Crazy Ex Girlfriend, and Criminal Minds, as she gained experience which eventually led to her series regular role on Bosch: Legacy. She is definitely one to watch, with her best work ahead of her.
