Following Ichigo’s heroic entrance to Soul Society in Bleach Thousand Year Blood War, Yhwach and his two heirs, Uryuu and Jugram, rise to the Royal Palace to face Squad 0 and kill the Soul King. There, Yhwach summons four Quincy of extraordinary power, these four each battle the members of Squad 0, called the Schutztaffel.
The Quincy at the service of Yhwach display several unique abilities, some stronger than others. Throughout the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, fans get to see the terrifying power of the Wandenreich, but Yhwach’s elite guards are all on a completely different level from what we’re used to seeing in Bleach.
Who are the Schutztaffel?
The Schutztaffel are four Quincy of otherworldly power, assigned as Yhwach’s elite royal guards, the equivalent of the Soul Reaper Squad 0. Each member of the Schutztaffel is far beyond the abilities of most captains of the Gotei 13, each equipped with an overpowered Schrift that completely dwarfs all the other Sternritters in comparison.
The members of the Schutztaffel are each handpicked to serve directly under Yhwach. While Uryuu Ishida and Jugram Haschwalth are not members of the team, as Yhwach’s successor and right-hand man, they can be considered honorary members. These are the members of the elite guard and their schrifft, starting with their leader, Lille Barro.
Sternritter X – Lille Barro – The X- Axis
Lille Barro is a tall, black man with blonde hair. He carries a custom sniper rifle that allows him to use his Schrift. He has one eye closed with a tattoo in the shape of an X. Lille was the first Quincy who was granted a Schrift by Yhwach, which would make him over 1,000 years old. Lille is a devoted follower of Yhwach, worshipping him like a god. Lille believes himself to be a servant of God, like a righteous, all-powerful angel. Lille wields the Schrifft X – The X – Axis. This ability lets Lille shoot concentrated blasts of reiatsu at the target he locks onto with his right eye. He shoots whatever he locks onto, and the X-Axis is a guaranteed hit on his target, not depending on trajectory, whatever Lille wants to hit, he is guaranteed to hit.
Sternritter M – Gerard Valkyrie – The Miracle
Gerard Valkyrie is a massive man with long blonde hair and an iron helmet. Gerard wields a broadsword and a round shield, he fights more like an ancient Viking rather than the uniqueness of the other Sternritter. Gerard possesses one of the most overpowered Schrifft among the Wandenreich, M – The Miracle. Like God’s strongest warrior, The Miracle allows Gerard to repeatedly overcome death and come back stronger. Gerard revives every time he is physically killed, evolving and growing more powerful, and less human, every time he comes back.
Sternritter C – Pernida Parnkgjas – The Compulsory
Pernida Parnkgjas is a short, hooded being with glowing yellow eyes peeking out of their hood. They have no discernable human voice or speech, although they seem to be able to communicate with their allies. Pernida is the most mysterious member of the group, as they don’t seem to be human at all. Pernida has the Schrift, C – The Compulsory, which allows Pernida to shoot their nerves into their opponents or inanimate objects to control their movements or shapes. Pernida can forcibly twist an opponent’s body to destroy it in seconds, and shape the ground or building to use as weapons.
Sternritter D – Askin Nakk Le Vaar – The Death Dealing
Askin Nakk Le Vaar is a tall and very slender man with black wavy hair. Askin is highly intelligent and calculating, he is extremely cold-headed, he doesn’t face any opponent, but rather only those he considers he can defeat. Askin would rather not fight unless he’s ordered to or if necessary. Askin is the most recent member of the team, having been chosen only a few minutes before Yhwach entered the Royal Palace. He’s equipped with the Schrifft, D – The Death Dealing. Askin accurately calculates the lethal dose needed for any substance to kill his opponents and manipulates it by ingesting said substance. By drinking his own blood, Askin manipulates the lethal dose of blood inside his opponent’s body, making their own blood lethal.
