Mahershala Ali’s Blade MCU movie plot has reportedly changed, and fans have mixed responses to the film’s latest retooling.
Marvel Studios announced the Blade movie at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con and cast acclaimed actor Ali as the vampire hunter. However, since its unveiling, Blade‘s production has encountered numerous challenges. Last year, it was revealed that the film is going through rewrites and has been delayed to 2025. Blade‘s rewrites led to a significant plot and setting change if recent rumors are true.
Trusted insider CanWeGetSomeToast suggests that Blade will be retooled and won’t be a period movie anymore. On the other hand, the insider also noted that the filming location has also been changed. As per the rumor, Blade will now be shot in the UK instead of Atlanta. As soon as the news surfaced online, fans gathered in large numbers on MarvelStudiosSpoilers/Reddit to talk about this massive change. The reactions to this news have been mixed, with some being happy about it and others disappointed. One of the fans wrote, “A Blade period piece would’ve been cool but my expectations are just a good movie with good storytelling and Blade kicking ass.” Another fan wrote, “I know people like their period pieces, but it being set in present-day greatly increases my interest. Hope they finally have a good script.”
“I think this is a shame. I think being a period piece would’ve really set this movie apart from past Blade movies and the style, genre, and tone of most MCU movies. Of course, it’s not the only way to do that, but I liked this idea,” wrote another fan. Another was disappointed by the idea of the movie getting revised. Meanwhile, another fan said, “My excitement for this movie is 100% dead.”
Blade was initially set to release in 2023 but got pushed to 2025 due to production problems. The new release date is still uncertain due to ongoing delays. This is not the first time that the movie has been reorganized since its inception. The movie is set to introduce Ali in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the Academy Award-winning actor had a voice cameo in Eternals, this would be the first time Ali will officially appear on-screen in the MCU. Although there were reports that Ali might leave the project, it has been confirmed that the actor is still part of the film and will star as the titular character. It has already been confirmed that Blade will be an R-rated project, which gives fans an indication that Marvel Studios is set to change its plans for the upcoming phase.
These rumored changes also prove that the production giant is willing to take drastic creative risks to yield better results. Subsequently, launching an R-rated Blade film would fulfill the audience’s desire to witness intense storytelling in theaters. As per reports, Michael Green has been roped in by Marvel Studios to do the Blade rewrites to maintain the R-rating.
Blade is scheduled to hit theaters on November 7, 2025.
