Batman: The Brave and the Bold casting rumors have been running rampant like the titular hero’s own rogues gallery. But now, at least one can be officially debunked courtesy of DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn.
Along with fan proposals such as that the DCU should kill its version of Batman, plenty of claims have popped up lately concerning the cast of the Caped Crusader’s future film. From theory to alleged leak, these Batman DCU casting rumors include heavy hitters like Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Fassbender, John Krasinski, and even Henry Cavill in a bit of a swing for the fences from fans. But there’s one particular fan-favorite actor many have been holding out hope to see come true. Unfortunately, as fitting as it would be, Gunn quickly shut this one down before it got too much traction.

Gunn has been regularly answering fan questions on Threads, most related to the upcoming DC Universe projects. In this case, a fan referenced a rumor floating around Twitter suggesting that Supernatural and The Boys star Jensen Ackles would be the next Batman/Bruce Wayne. Gunn didn’t mince words in his response. “There’s no script yet. Ofc it’s false.” His bridled frustration with the idea seemed to come through in that particular abbreviation. However, given Gunn’s evident love of his fans, it was likely targeted less at the question-asker and more at the very idea.
This offers a couple of updates on the upcoming Batman film. For one, it confirms that production is still super early for the first film based on the beloved hero since Matt Reeves’ The Batman. That might admittedly be a bit of a downer for some fans. But Gunn’s comment also specified that no casting choices had been made for The Brave and the Bold, hopefully shutting down much of the supposed “leaks” claiming to have real info on such things. This one in particular also alleged that The Umbrella Academy‘s Javon Walton would play Bruce’s son Damian Wayne, a.k.a. Robin, Feel the Beat star Wolfgang Novogratz as former Robin and current Nightwing Dick Grayson, and even Dexter: New Blood villain and (fittingly) former Lex Luthor voice actor Clancy Brown as Alfred Pennyworth. Again, these have all been denied by Gunn.
Luckily, this full-frontal debunking by Gunn also hasn’t completely ruled out any of these potential actor picks, so there’s still plenty of room for fans to keep speculating. There will be plenty of room for that regarding another upcoming project. Given yet another response in the same Threads chain, Gunn answered more optimistically about progress on Superman: Legacy. Another fan inquired about how far along he was in the film’s script-writing process, to which Gunn replied that it’s been almost entirely complete for some time now. “99.9%. I’m always changing small things but it’s been essentially done since well before the strike.”
Of course, this means there’s still a long wait for both films. Fans of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will have to be patient before they can finally see Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane in Superman: Legacy, and that patience will demand some extra help for those looking forward to Batman: The Brave and the Bold. But at least now, those fans have a better understanding of where things in the DC Universe are heading. Or at least, they have a better idea of where things aren’t.
