Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo, the sweet and popular 2016 K-Drama, has announced a webcomic adaptation.
According to Redbeanime, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo will receive a webcomic adaptation. The webcomic will stick closely to the drama’s events and feature illustrations from Man-oh. IMXTOON will produce the webcomic, and the first chapter will release on June 30 on Kakao Page and Naver Series. IMXTOON plans on releasing more webcomic adaptations and venturing into the audio drama area, from their MBC broadcasts, according to an official from the MBC IP Strategy Team.

Debuting on Nov. 16, 2016, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo features a coming-of-age and rom-com storyline that captured viewers’ hearts despite not garnering many views during its time of broadcast. The drama follows Kim Bok-joo, a talented weightlifter who attends an athletics college. The weightlifting team often clashes with the gymnastics team, often during times when Bok-joo stands up for her friends. Bokjoo harbors a one-sided crush on Jung Jae-yi, the cousin of her childhood friend Jung Joo-hyung. On the other hand, Jung Joo-hyung attends the same college as Kim Bok-joo but as a swimmer. Due to trauma in his childhood, Jung Joo-hyung’s swimming career has been rife with disqualifications due to false starts. When the two bump into each other, they don’t realize they have known each other since childhood; when they do, they begin to grow closer and fall in love.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo stars Lee Sung-Kyung (Cheese in the Trap and The Doctors) as Kim Bok-joo and Nam Joo-hyuk (Who Are You: School 2015 and Twenty-Five Twenty-One) as Jung Joo-hyung. Lee Jae-yoon (My Love By My Side and Heartless City) plays Jung Jae-yi. Kyung Soo-jin (That Winter, the Wind Blows and Meloholic) plays Song Shi-ho, Joon-hyung’s ex-girlfriend and Bok-joo’s roommate and is an elite rhythmic gymnast.
The History of Webcomics Receiving K-Drama Adaptations
Most of the time, K-Dramas are based off of webcomic series, but on occasion, the popularity of drama series has led to other creative adaptations. Aside from Weightlifting Fairy Kim, numerous popular K-Dramas have spawned webcomic adaptations, including the 2023 series King the Land, which received a prequel manhwa. The 2016 fantasy romance W received a webcomic adaptation titled W: Two Worlds on Manta Comics.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo is available to watch on Viki. No announcements have been made about an English release for the webcomic adaptation.
