Studio Orange has revealed that taking on the upcoming Trigun Stampede anime series has been its toughest challenge yet.
In an interview with Honey’s Anime, Producer Kiyotaka Waki and Producer and PR Yoshihiro Watanabe shared that Trigun Stampede, which has a planned air date sometime in January 2023, has been the hardest anime series that the animation studio has had to tackle to date. The degree of difficulty may be partly due to the technical challenges that the series has posed, with the two Studio Orange members stating they set higher goals for themselves with every new show they take on. “Whenever we start a new show we try to raise a certain goal for technical challenges,” they said. “For every technical challenge we clear we want to extend it and include everything in that show and in this case, that would be Trigun Stampede!”
Trigun Stampede Takes Visual Inspiration From the Manga
Given that Trigun Stampede is a reboot of the popular 1998 anime series, the interviewer inquired whether Waki and Watanabe made any effort to update the look of the anime to a more contemporary style. The pair revealed that they decided not to modernize the designs of the characters as they opted to mimic the look and feel of the manga series instead.
“We never really had the discussion to change the design,” they said. “When we first started developing the show we had more designs that looked closer to the original. Our designs changed when we discussed the world and when the world built up that’s how we made the designs fit more into that world. We never really intended to update or modernize any of the designs. We were approached to understand how creator Yasuhiro Nightow looked at it for our designs. Of course, it’s manga so what you see in front of you is what is described. By reading deeper into the manga we felt Nightow has this entire foundation created so that is what we tried to look into ourselves.”
Created by Yasuhiro Nightow, Trigun follows famous gunman Vash the Stampede as he traverses the fictional planet of No Man’s Land to fight the various bounty hunters who seek to win the massive bounty on his head. While his reputation has dubbed him a heartless killer who leaves a trail of death and destruction wherever he goes, Vash, in reality, is a huge pacifist who avoids violence at all costs. As his adventures continue, more of Vash’s past comes to light and he soon discovers that everything is not as it seems.
Trigun Stampede will premiere on Jan. 7, 2023. The original 1998 Trigun anime series is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
