In the new romantic comedy anime Tomo-chan Is a Girl, Japanese voice actor Sally Amaki voices the character Carol in both the original Japanese version and the English dub.

Twitter user @GoldyRiSA spotlighted the voice actor in a post, noting that she is one of very few Japanese voice actors who portrays the same character in two different languages. The tweet includes a behind-the-scenes clip of Amaki voicing Carol in both English and Japanese. Other users pointed out that another anime voice actor has done the same recently; Karin Kagami plays Maho Akashi in both dubs of the idol anime D4DJ All Mix.

Sally Amaki is a bilingual voice actor who also known for portraying the character Kiriko from Overwatch. She has also played Ashley in the Magia Record mobile game. In addition to her acting roles, Amaki is also an idol in the girl group 22/7, a multimedia idol franchise including fictional characters in an anime, as well as live performances and music videos.

Who Is Sally Amaki’s Tomo-chan Is a Girl Character?

In Tomo-chan is a Girl, Amaki’s character Carol Olston is a British girl with an air-headed and cheerful personality. She initially considers the main character a rival, but then the two become friends. Despite her ditzy demeanor and clueless outlook on the world, Carol shows signs of actually being rather intelligent. While she teases Tomo about her crush, she does support her friend in her romantic endeavors. Carol has a crush on her own longtime friend, a boy named Kosuke.

Tomo-chan is a Girl follows the tomboy protagonist Tomo Aizawa who has always been considered “one of the boys.” Now a high schooler, she’s developed a crush on her lifelong best friend Jun Kubota. No matter how much Tomo attempts to express her feelings, Jun barely even recognizes her as a girl, let alone a love interest. Tomo’s tough tsundere personality does not help the situation, as she tends to send mixed messages. Even though they’ve yet to become romantic partners, the pair has a strong and loving friendship.

The anime is an adaptation of a 4-panel manga that originally ran from 2015 to 2019. Tomo-chan’s first episode premiered on Jan. 5, 2023. The first season is ongoing, with only five episodes out at the time of writing. The show is available to watch on Crunchyroll’s streaming service as episodes are released.
