Tokyo Revengers Is Better Than Pokémon, According to Gen Z

Generation Z deems Tokyo Revengers ‘Christmas Showdown’ arc a better anime than Pokémon.

As detailed on Anime Senpai, a popular Japanese Keyboard app called Semiji recently asked its users to choose their Top 10 favorite anime series. Between May 16 and 22, nearly 2,500 participants aged 10-24 participated in a survey to determine the most popular anime of 2023 (thus far.) Among Gen Z’s Top 10 picks was Tokyo Revengers Christmas Showdown Arc, which sits at the 3rd place spot. The iconic Pokémon series, a common favorite among millennials, came in at number six on the list.

Originally a manga series by Ken Wakui, Tokyo Revengers’ story begins when a young man named Takemichi Hanagaki discovers his ex-girlfriend, Hinata Tachibana, has been murdered by a notorious group called the Tokyo Manji Gang. While coping with the shock, Takemichi suddenly “time-leaps” 12 years backward, giving him a chance to save Hinata by rising up the group’s ranks and taking it over from the inside. In Christmas Showdown Arc, Takemichi and members of the Tokyo Manji Gang face off against the formidable Black Dragon motorcycle gang. Participants who selected Christmas Showdown Arc as their favorite anime stated that they found themselves moved by the series’ engaging storyline and the character’s efforts to protect their families.

Gen Z’s Favorite Anime Is 2023’s Biggest Hit

Gen Z’s top pick of 2023 is Oshi no Ko, which has topped lists this year for most Anticipated Anime and Highest-Rated anime. The series is a reincarnation tale about a rural gynecologist that is reborn as the infant son of his favorite pop idol, Ai Hoshino. In addition to its novel storyline, the anime has also garnered praise for its insightful commentary on Japan’s modern pop idol industry. Sitting as Gen Z’s second favorite series is Studio ufotable’s Demon Slayer Season 3, or Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village Arc. This series chronicles Tanjiro Kamado’s efforts to defeat two dangerous upper-rank demons, Gyokko and Hantengu. The season debuted on Apr. 9.

The long-running Pokémon anime recently started a brand-new chapter with the premiere of Pokémon Horizons, which took place on Apr. 14. This series replaces the anime’s original protagonist Ash Ketchum with two new characters named Liko and Roy, who each set out on their own respective journeys. Other new characters include Captain Friede and his partner, Captain Pikachu, who travel across the land researching Pokémon in a giant airship. The series also introduces a new villain group called The Explorers, which some speculate could eventually fill the role of Team Rocket.

Tokyo Revengers is available to stream on Disney+ and Max. Pokémon Journeys and its follow-up seasons are available on Netflix.
