The following contains spoilers for Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch from Mercury Episode 12, “Keep Marching On Instead of Running Off,” streaming on Crunchyroll.
The most shocking moment from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury became a hilarious pineapple-on-pizza meme in this fan rendition of the Season 1 finale.
Twitter user AhjerTW recontextualized the shocking moment of Suletta’s Mercury gundam smashing a terrorist into a bloody pulp into an amusing take on the never-ending debate regarding pineapple on pizza. Suletta’s questionable regard for human life turns into her questionable taste in fast food as she slams the controversial pizza topping right in front of Miorine Rembran’s face, splashing her cheek with tomato sauce. Based on Miorine’s horrified expression, she isn’t thrilled with her fiancée’s choice of topping.
The Witch from Mercury’s Shocking Finale
Gundam fans were shocked by Suletta’s actions in Episode 12 of The Witch from Mercury. Suletta using her Gundam to obliterate a terrorist threatening Miorine’s life and treating his demise like it was no big deal marks a dramatic and unsettling shift for the good-natured character. Miorine, already scarred by acts of extreme violence, didn’t hold back from calling her bride-to-be a “murderer” for the horrific way she killed the enemy soldier.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is the latest installment of the Gundam franchise, which has been going strong for over 40 years. The series began airing on July 14, 2022 and finished its Season 1 run on Jan. 8, 2023. Ichiro Okouchi is the screenwriter for the show. What makes The Witch from Mercury different from the previous series is that it’s the first Gundam anime to have a leading female protagonist.
According to Koichi Tokita, an artist who worked on various Gundam manga series set in an alternative universe, he showed support for a female-led Gundam series in the past. However, higher-ups told him that a “Gunpla belonging to a female character wouldn’t sell.” “Now we live in an age where we can have a female protagonist and she has a plastic model too,” Tokita wrote on Twitter. “I think it’s great. I’m so happy.” Additionally, Tokita praised Episode 1 of The Witch from Mercury for establishing the coupling of Suletta and Miorine. Many anime fans within the LGBTQ+ community also praised the show for putting the blossoming relationship between Suletta and Miorine front and center for everyone to see.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is available to stream on Crunchyroll. According to the series’ Twitter account, Season 2 will air in April.
