Season 2 of The Eminence in Shadow officially has a streaming home.

Studio Nexus’s dark fantasy isekai anime will be available on HIDIVE when it premieres in October, simulcasting alongside the Japanese broadcast. AMC Network’s streaming service will have both the English subtitled version and the English dub. Alongside the exciting news, HIDIVE posted a trailer that teases what the new season has in store for viewers and reflects The Eminence in Shadow‘s unique balance of comedic, over-the-top edginess.

A different trailer for The Eminence in Shadow Season 2 was released earlier this year. The promotional video sets up the season’s setting, the darkly atmospheric Lawless City, and introduces its three rulers — the Tyrant, the Progenitor Vampire and the Spirit Fox.

The Story of The Eminence in Shadow

Daisuke Aizawa’s light novel series began serialization on the user-generated, self-publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō in May 2018, before it was acquired by Enterbrain, which has published the books since November 2018. Like many other isekai stories, The Eminence in Shadow starts with a seemingly normal teenager being struck by a truck, dying and getting transported into a fantastical world. Reborn as Cid Kagenou, the youth creates a secret organization called Shadow Garden to fight the evil Cult of Diablos. However, The Eminence in Shadow presents an interesting twist on the isekai formula; while the Cult of Diablos is in fact real and a very dangerous threat to the world, Cid firmly believes the scenario is an elaborate role-play game set up by his new friends.

The unconventional take on the popular subgenre has greatly resonated with light novel readers; as of February, Aizawa’s series has sold over four million copies worldwide and inspired a spin-off manga, titled The Eminence in Shadow! Shadow Side Story, which has appeared in Comp Ace since July 2019.

Nexus’s adaptation debuted its first season last October as part of the fall 2022 anime lineup. Directed by Kazuya Nakanishi (Darwin’s Game) and written by Kanichi Katou (Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun), the show performed generally well with critics and garnered a passionate fan following. The Eminence in Shadow stars Seiichirō Yamashita (Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town) as Cid alongside Kana Hanazawa (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) as Princess Alexia Midgar and Asami Seto (My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!) as Alpha.

Yen Press distributes both Aizawa’s light novel series and the spin-off manga in North America.
