The isekai film That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime: Scarlet Bond has sold over 1 million tickets in Japan.
As detailed on Anime News Network, Scarlet Bond is a major hit in its home country, having earned over 1.33 billion yen (roughly $10 million at the time of writing) since its Nov. 25 debut. During its opening weekend, it earned 297 million yen (about $2.24 million) on the backs of over 225,000 tickets sold. The film will debut in North American theaters on Jan. 20.
Scarlet Bond features a brand-new story created by Fuse, the author of the That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime light novel series. The film has the series’ main hero, Rimuru Tempest, investigating a new country called Raja that is plagued by a mysterious curse that is threatening the well-being of the nation’s citizens by destroying their water sources. It also appears to be harming their Queen, whose health is rapidly declining. While trying to discover more about the curse, Rimuru, his commander, Benimaru and their other companions meet Hiiro, a survivor of the Ogre race that has settled in Raja and also wants to end the curse that is destroying his home.
The Scarlet Bond Movie
Scarlet Bond is directed by Yasuhito Kikuchi, who has served in several directorial roles for the That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime anime series. The show’s main screenwriter, Kazuyuki Fudeyasu (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), also wrote the film’s screenplay. Ayumi Sato served as the film’s Art Director, while Ryoma Ebata created the film’s character designs. Hitoshi Fujima composed the film’s music. Voice actress Miho Okazaki reprised their role as Rimuru Tempest. Most of the other members of the show’s cast also reprised their roles, including Asuna Tomari as Gobta, Chikahiro Kobayashi as Ranga, Houchu Ohtsuka as Hakuro and Jun Fukushima as Gabiru. Yuma Uchida (Fruits Basket, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans) plays the new character, Hiiro.
The plot of Fuse’s That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime light novel series starts with a 37-year-old man named Satoru Mikami who lives a simple but lonely life in the real world. One day, Satoru is brutally murdered and reborn into a fantasy world in the form of a blue slime monster with unique powers and abilities. Shortly afterward, Satoru befriends and helps a Storm Dragon named Veldora, who grants him the name Rimiru Tempest and accompanies him on a mission to create a new country where all races can live together in peace. The anime’s third season is currently in the works, but a release window has not yet been announced.
That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime: Scarlet Bond is coming to theaters in North America on Jan. 20. The anime series is available on Crunchyroll.
