The following contains spoilers for Spy x Family Season 1, Episode 25, “First Contact,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.
No matter how great and unflappable Spy x Family’s Twilight is, even the world’s best spy can feel fear.
Twilight has been through a lot and seen a lot. He’s seen more and greater horrors when he was younger than any child should. In his decade-long career as Twilight, he’s undertaken countless dangerous missions, including infiltrating a terrorist group and dismantling a missile with one second to spare. While he’s lost a few years since he started a family with Anya and Yor, there’s not much that rattles Loid. However, according to a translation by Anime Corner, Takuya Eguchi, the voice of Loid Forger, confessed the scene where Loid finally came face-to-face with Donovan Desmond, the target of Operation Strix, was a scene that filled him with fear.
Desmond Subverted Expectations
The particular scene Eguchi was speaking to was when Loid apologized to Donovan for Anya sending Damian flying with her one punch in Episode 6. Instead of getting angry, Donovan was surprisingly amiable and even smiled, making for an unsettling first meeting. This reaction was a far cry from what Loid thought Donovan would be like, making the Chairman that much more of a threat. Eguchi said, “As though it almost broke the image of Desmond I have had so far, the moment in which he looks gentle made feel rather scared.”
Every Spy x Family cast member had an opportunity to pick what they felt was the best scene from each episode. Atsumi Tanezaki, the voice actor for Anya Forger, picked Anya and Becky’s shopping excursion in Episode 24. It was a scene that nearly moved her to tears as she said, “I’m glad that Anya has Becky, and Becky has Anya. It makes me go nuts over my thought of what Becky has in mind at the moment when she gets the sheep [from Anya], and it also makes me really happy to the point it almost makes me cry that Anya is getting more time to spend with friends, more ordinary experiences and more cherished memories.”
Written and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo, Spy x Family has recorded over 29 million copies as of December 2022. The manga started biweekly serialization in Shōnen Jump+ in March 2019 and currently has 10 tankōbon volumes as of October 2022. An anime adaptation, produced by CloverWorks and Wit Studio, released in April 2022. Thanks to the anime, everyone’s favorite gremlin child Anya rose to the top as the most popular character on Twitter. Shortly before the first season ended, Spy x Family announced a second season, and an original animated film was in the works and preparing for a 2023 release date.
Season 1 of Endo’s hit series Spy x Family about a spy, an assassin and a four-year-old telepath who somehow manage to make a family work, is available on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
