Spy x Family’s Loid isn’t going to be happy when he finds out that a certain pink-haired girl somehow teleported herself to Qatar to watch the FIFA World Cup.
Captured on the big screen TV by @Ahmedm94m on Twitter and in clearer quality by @shakaragi, an Anya cosplayer sits in the middle of the crowd, watching the FIFA World Cup take place. It’s hard to miss the cosplayer with Anya’s iconic shoulder-length pink hair and black horned hair ornaments. They also made sure to don her Eden Academy uniform, which means Anya must have skipped school to attend the World Cup.
FIFA holds the World Cup every four years, and this year, the tournament takes place in Qatar from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18. This year’s tournament is significant as this is the first World Cup to take place in the Arab world and Qatar is making their debut as a soccer team. A total of 32 nations will play, eight more than the previous cycle in 2018. France will be looking to defend their title this year.
Soccer Anime Experienced a Surge in Popularity
Soccer anime has risen in popularity in recent years. Aoashi aired in May 2021. The series follows a self-centered player who gets a second shot at playing soccer after getting removed from a game, aired in May 2021. Currently airing in the fall anime line-up is the soccer anime Blue Lock, which features a very different take on the traditional storytelling style of sports anime. The artist Yusuke Nomura and Giant Killing’s artist Tsujitomo collaborated in August to illustrate their respective main characters sporting the uniform Japan’s team will wear at the World Cup.
After getting adopted by Loid Forger, a secret spy disguised as a psychiatrist, Spy x Family’s Anya has a huge task ahead of her. In order to help her father achieve world peace via a mission called Operation Strix, she has to earn eight Stella Stars at Eden Academy to become an Imperial Scholar. Once she becomes an Imperial Scholar, Loid will have access to Donovan Desmond, a reclusive and dangerous politician who can potentially disrupt the delicate peace between the East and the West. The problem is, even with her telepathic powers, it turns out it’s extremely difficult for Anya to secure even one Star. Is Operation Strix doomed?
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is currently happening from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18. When fans aren’t watching the game, they can catch the latest episode of Spy x Family on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
