The anticipation for the anime adaptation of Solo Leveling is slowly leveling up with more reveals of the character designs.
Shonenleaks uploaded three sets of designs, comprised of protagonist Sung Jinwoo and Cha Hae-in, the only female S-Rank Hunter in Korea. The first image shows Jinwoo brandishing his dagger, with this version of Jinwoo appearing to be one before he significantly leveled up. The next image has several designs of Hae-in looking fierce with her battle gear and her normal civilian clothes. The last two designs see Jinwoo in action, using a combination of weaponry, physical abilities and summoning skills.
Solo Leveling Is a Global Hit
Written by Chugong with artwork by Dubu, Solo Leveling is one of the most popular webcomics to date, with over 16 million views on Tappytoon and just under 12 million views on Tapas. As a single IP, Solo Leveling has over 620 million views in Korea. When the announcement of the anime adaptation dropped earlier in the year, fans were ecstatic to hear A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online, 86 and Black Butler) would be helming it. Joining the production is composer Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan and Blue Exorcist), director Shunsuke Nakashige (Sword Art Online, The Ancient Magus’ Bride and Bungo Stray Dogs Season 2) and character designer Tomoko Sudo (Black Butler and Alice in Borderland). Crunchyroll released a teaser trailer in July.
Artist Dubu released a heartfelt statement expressing his excitement about the anime. “Solo Leveling is finally making its anime debut. It feels like only yesterday that we got the offer for the anime adaptation. I feel so overwhelmed when I think that the anime is really being created right now. This is all thanks to you fans who love and support Solo Leveling. I’m filled with gratitude. Thank you very much. Also, please support the animation production team.” The artist ends with, “If this anime gives new enjoyment to the readers, I’ll be very happy.” Unfortunately, Dubu won’t be able to see his work come to life as the artist tragically passed away on July 23, 2022, due to a brain hemorrhage.
Solo Leveling follows E-Rank Hunter Sung Jinwoo, infamous for being humanity’s weakest Hunter. Despite being the most likely to die first, Jinwoo is steadfast in his resolve to continue working as a Hunter. However, one excursion to a D-Rank Dungeon ends in chaos and panic when the Hunters discover they’ve walked into a dangerous Double Dungeon. It was only after Jinwoo accepted his status as a Player presented to him by the System that he survived the ordeal. Now, he must complete the various tasks the System doles out to him and level up to become humanity’s strongest Hunter.
Solo Leveling will premiere sometime in 2023. The completed webcomic is available, online, on Tappytoon and Tapas. The novel is licensed in English by Yen Press.
