Anime waifus have varying personalities across all genres: some are ruthless warriors, others are compassionate caregivers. However, some of the most endearing and underappreciated characters are shy anime waifus. The shyest anime waifus have difficulty expressing their feelings.
They are often so demure that strong emotions overwhelm them. Shy waifus always defer decisions to others and strive to put themselves last. Sawako Kuronuma is an outcast in Kimi ni Todoke. The majority of her classmates tease her for her appearance, making her feel ostracized. Although she has a kind personality, Sawako is shy around people since she is not sure if they will make fun of her or not.
Sawako is a kind person with others’ best interests at heart. However, everyone’s perception of her makes it hard for her to interact with others. It is only after she feels completely comfortable with someone that others can see the vibrant person Sawako truly is.
9 Ochaco Uraraka (My Hero Academia)
Ochaco Uraraka is one of the many up-and-coming heroes in My Hero Academia. Uraraka is a bubbly student who is eager to do a good job. However, she becomes tongue-tied and goofy when she is around her crush, Izuku Midoriya.
Her feelings for Midoriya affect her so much, that she has to consciously put them aside. Plus, the villain Himiko Toga often uses Uraraka’s crush against her when they fight each other. As much as Uraraka tries to hide her feelings by being coy, she can’t deny them when they are so blatantly obvious to everyone else.
8 Ami Mizuno (Sailor Moon)
Ami Mizuno is Sailor Mercury from Sailor Moon. Ami’s goal is to get into a good college and become a doctor. She works incredibly hard to achieve this goal, but that leads to her being antisocial.
Thankfully, Usagi Tsukino befriends her and the two fight intergalactic evils together. Though Ami can speak her mind when she is in battle, she still has problems speaking out when it comes to her new friends. Ami may be a reserved presence in the Sailor Scouts, but a much welcome one.
7 Megumi Tadokoro (Food Wars)
Megumi Tadokoro is one of the many chefs-in-training at Totsuki Academy in Food Wars. Unlike most of the students, Megumi is reserved and lacks the abrasiveness of her peers. Even so, she believes in her cooking and is extremely passionate about her family’s restaurant back home.
Megumi does become more confident in herself as the show progresses, but she remains easily flustered. She also still doesn’t speak up as much as her friends. Fortunately, they all cheer her on and boost her up so that she knows what a great chef she is.
6 Kosaki Onodera (Nisekoi)
Kosaki Onodera is Raku Ichigo’s childhood friend in NiSekai. Onodera is a friendly, reserved individual. She tries to get along with everyone and is especially demure around Raku, whom she has a crush on.
Onodera doesn’t like to express her feelings, which leads her to a lot of heartache. Her shyness and lack of initiative force her to choose to let Raku be with Chitoge Kirisaki, even though Onodera wants to be with him herself.
5 Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket)
Tohru Honda is a young, orphaned girl from Fruits Basket. Tohru’s past tragedies have made her a compassionate person almost to a fault. She is very shy and never speaks up for herself. Tohru always puts others first, just as she was taught by her parents.
Although Tohru can speak her mind when her emotions rise, she doesn’t like drawing attention to herself. As soon as all eyes are on her, she tries to deflect the attention to anything else. Tohru doesn’t think she is anything special, but her friends and loved ones would vehemently disagree.
4 Yor Briar (Spy x Family)
Yor Briar is an assassin turned housewife from Spy x Family. Despite her cutthroat moonlighting as a murderer for hire, Yor has a lot of problems expressing her emotions. Since her parents died when she was young, Yor had to assume a parenting role early in life, which causes her to always put others first – even against her best interests.
Though she says she happily obliges, fans can see how much pain Yor is in when she really wants to be selfish. Her love for her new husband Loid Forger are a particular source of contention, as she continues to deny her very strong feelings for him. Though she always tries to be reserved, Yor is bursting to tell people about her real life and how she really feels.
3 Airi Sakura (Classroom of the Elite)
Airi Sakura is one of the students in class D from Classroom of the Elite. Contrary to her influencer online presence, Airi is incredibly timid. While a lot of this is due to questionable fans, Airi is also just not as secure in real life as she is online.
For the most part, Airi believes that she isn’t anything special. She only posts online because it boosts her confidence. Airi fails to realize the talent she has in creating her photos and her strength in continuing to do something she loves despite uncomfortable “fans” is worth its weight in gold.
2 Hinata Hyuga (Naruto)
Hinata Hyuga may come from one of the strongest clans in Naruto, but her feelings for Naruto Uzumaki compel her to act coy. Hinata is a soft-spoken individual who does not like to stand out, but who has more than proven herself in battle.
Hinata eventually overcomes her shyness, but it takes a lot of personal effort for her to overcome her fears. Even though Hinata is a skilled combatant, she struggles with talking to the boy she loves. Thankfully, Hinata finally gets the courage she needs by the end.
1 Shoko Komi (Komi Can’t Communicate)
Shoko Komi is an extremely shy girl from Komi Can’t Communicate. Komi is so timid that she cannot speak in front of anyone but her family. However, she is determined to change now that she is in high school.
Despite her fears, Komi seizes every opportunity to speak to strangers. She attempts to order coffee, tries to order ramen, and does small exercises with her friend, Hitohito Tadano for practice. Komi works diligently to overcome her shyness, but that does not happen in a day.
