Popular and talented cosplayer Jahara Jayde has created another Sailor Moon cosplay.
The master costume maker uploaded a video on Twitter showcasing their very accurate Sailor Saturn cosplay, which features the character’s choker with a white six-point star, her flower petal-like short sleeves and her maroon bows. The wielder of the Silence Glaive isn’t the only Sailor Scout Jahara Jayde has brought to life; earlier this year, they posted a photo gallery of equally impressive cosplays of Sailor Venus, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Jupiter and others. Moreover, their fabrication skills aren’t limited to recreating characters from the magical world of Sailor Moon; their Twitter account also features several pictures and videos of Final Fantasy VII cosplays, including a genderswapped Barret Wallace and a powerful Tifa Lockhart.
Sailor Moon Sets the Standard for Shojo
The Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon manga series by Naoko Takeuchi first appeared in Kodansha’s shojo magazine Nakayoshi in December 1991, with the final chapter being published in 1997, resulting in a total of 52 individual chapters. Over 35 million copies of Takeuchi’s series have sold worldwide, making it one of the best-selling shojo manga in history. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon notably won the shojo category at the Kodansha Manga Awards in 1993.
The narrative follows Usagi Tsukino, a middle schooler who receives mystical abilities from a mysterious artifact called the Legendary Silver Crystal and becomes the titular magical girl. Using her newfound powers, Usagi battles against evil forces set on destroying or subjugating the Earth (and sometimes the entire universe). Along the way, she finds multiple allies who also take up the mantle of Pretty Guardian.
While Takeuchi’s manga concluded almost thirty years ago, the story of Sailor Moon remains a cornerstone of the anime/manga community specifically and the pop culture landscape as a whole. Particularly, it continues as a common inspiration for creative fan works like cosplay. Beyond Jahara Jayde’s beautiful rendition of Sailor Saturn, recent examples include professional cosplayer and model Tami Yuurei’s sophisticated reimagining of Sailor Neptune and Lex Lunar’s fiery take on Sailor Mars.
Sailor Moon Continues to Inspire Moonies Worldwide
Sailor Moon also continually inspires stunning fan art. Most notably, the mangaka of Sometimes She’s the Light posted a beautiful watercolor painting of Sailor Jupiter to celebrate the Sailor Scout’s birthday at the beginning of December. The image includes multiple pink roses, alluding to the character’s passion for flowers.
Takeuchi’s Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon manga series is distributed by Kodansha Comics in North America and Turnaround Publishers Services in the United Kingdom.
