The iconic magical girl transformation sequence from Sailor Moon is brought to life by a skilled cosplayer at Anime Expo 2023.
On Twitter, a cosplayer who goes by the name of @/2Dmimi shared a video of herself dressed up as Sailor Moon at this year’s Anime Expo, held in Los Angeles, California. However, 2Dmimi’s Sailor Moon cosplay wasn’t based on Usagi Tsukino in her Pretty Guardian uniform. Instead, it’s based on Usagi becoming Sailor Moon in her ‘Moon Crystal Power, Make Up” transformation. Specifically, the part where colorful forms of energy wrap around Usagi’s body to create her uniform.

The Sailor Moon compact in 2Dmimi’s costume is the Crystal Star device Usagi uses to transform into Sailor Moon. It is also used to store the Silver Crystal. The magical transformation item was introduced in Episode 51 of the original anime TV series, “A New Transformation: Usagi’s Power-Up.” Sailor Moon fans are praising 2Dmimi for her creative cosplay, calling it “stunning,” “amazing” and “magical.”
Since the 1991 release of Codename: Sailor V, the Sailor Moon series has dominated pop culture for over 30 years. Despite the series originating in the early 90s, anime fans today continue to show their love and appreciation for the magical girl series by Naoko Takeuchi.
