Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece may premiere in August 2023.
On Twitter, @OP_Netflix_Fan posted an image that announced the live-action One Piece would premiere its first season on Netflix on August 31, 2023. In the tweet’s replies, @OPLAfandom claimed the information came from a “reliable source,” but the date remains “subject to change until Netflix makes an official announcement.” Previously, the streaming service declared a release window of 2023 for its One Piece adaptation. Netflix also posted a teaser image with Luffy and the Straw Hats in front of the crew’s ship, The Going Merry.
One Piece Live-Action’s Footwear Controversy
Following the debut of an official poster for the live-action One Piece, one fan questioned Luffy’s choice of footwear. Emily Rudd, who plays Nami in Netflix’s adaptation, attributes the fashion decision of shoes over sandals to the amount of stunt work the cast performs for the series. “Sandals, unfortunately are not the safest footwear to do stunt work in, and we didn’t want ya’ll to miss out on the amazing work @inakigo can do and did,” Rudd wrote.
The user Rudd references is none other than Iñaki Godoy, who portrays the lead character of Monkey D. Luffy. Recently, Godoy revealed that he would embark on a three-month journey around the Caribbean seas. Unlike his character’s role of captaining a ship, the actor will cook, clean and assist in navigating the vessel between islands. In addition to tagging Rudd in the post’s caption, Godoy wrote the hashtags #ihavenoideawhatisignedupfor and #helppls.
In response to the production of Netflix’s One Piece, many fans rallied for the casting of Halloween Ends star Jamie Lee Curtis as Kureha. While Curtis didn’t join Season 1, her involvement in a potential second season remains unclear. As a self-proclaimed fan of Eiichiro Oda’s series, Curtis discussed how she contacted Brina Palencia, the voice of Tony Tony Chopper, to record the outgoing voice message on her daughter Ruby Guest’s phone as a birthday present. Afterward, Curtis and Palencia became friends, and the voice actor later appeared on her podcast.
Previously, Guest starred on a One Piece podcast and discussed her mother’s love for the long-running anime. “My mom loves Kureha. I would be 100% for it and I honestly, since Netflix is doing the live-action adaptation, I would highly recommend her to pull some strings to see if she can,” Guest said. In addition to her love for anime, Curtis has cosplayed as characters from World of Warcraft and Street Fighter.
The One Piece anime series is available to stream on Hulu and Crunchyroll. The manga is available in English on VIZ Media.
