The following contains spoilers for Episode 4 of The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World, “Dungeon Trap,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.
The most recent episode of The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World was released via Crunchyroll for North American viewers on Jan. 28, 2023. Episode 3, “The Hero the Oracles Spoke of,” revealed the position of Seika and Amyu in this new world. Now that Seika has learned that Amyu is the world’s hero, he has made it his goal to work alongside her. However, Episode 4 shares how difficult it is for Seika to become Amyu’s ally.
“Dungeon Trap” delves into a journey given to the top two students in the class. Amyu and Yifa are ordered to deliver the school roster as an offering in the Londonea Forest. Seika learns that if Amyu or Yifa refuses, the position will go to the next highest-standing student. This leads to Seika ordering Yifa to back down from the task so that he has the opportunity to work with Amyu. Now it’s up to Seika and Amyu to work together to deliver the roster, but there is more in store for them than a simple trip.
Another Magic Circle Appears
Seika’s mission to get closer to Amyu reveals itself to be more difficult than he thought. Amyu pushes Seika away by blaming him for joining the mission in an attempt to seduce her. Despite Seika’s disputes, Amyu is convinced that he is filthy in some way. The hardships of Seika’s attempt to get closer to Amyu are put on hold as they discover a magic circle in the forest. The circle is much smaller and a different color than the ONE Seika found in the previous episode. Before they have the chance to investigate, the two are transported to a dungeon underground. The dungeon is no match for the two of them as they defeat all the monsters that come after them. Even if the monsters aren’t too strong to kill, there is a new issue that the two learn of: Amyu has a curse put on her.
Episode 4 does a good job of showing the teamwork between Seika and Amyu as they are thrust into a dungeon that utilizes both of their skills to get through. However, “Dungeon Trap” also rushes into its enemy reveal. There’s a good amount of monster fighting that fills the episode, but only a few minutes are focused on who cursed Amyu. After escaping the dungeon and completing their mission, Seika is shown confronting one of the teachers. Before viewers know what is going on, Seika has addressed the curse and has identified the teacher, Cordell, as the culprit. It doesn’t take much for Cordell to confess to Seika, who kills Cordell within minutes after his admission of guilt.
Will the Pacing Change?
The most recent episode of The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World has strengths and weaknesses that will impact the rest of the series. The development between Seika and Amyu’s understanding of each other is well done, and the background knowledge provided for Seika’s old life and Amyu’s childhood supports the tale. Despite this, there are a few things that impact the pacing of the series. While it’s not a major story-altering issue, the explanation of light and dark magic is held off until this episode. Along with this, the addressing of Cordell’s true self is rushed over. Still, there is hope that next week’s episode will reveal more about the world and its enemies that Seika and the rest of the characters have yet to discover.
Episode 4 leans into the friendship that Seika craves with Amyu in order for him to achieve his goal of a long and happy life. The pacing of the series has been put into question, but there is hope, as the previous episodes have done a decent job at this. The next episode will likely reveal more about the enemies against Seika and Amyu as well as the budding friendship between the two and Yifa.
