Crunchyroll teased North American fans with a glimpse of the upcoming Psycho-Pass: Providence.
The popular anime streaming website Crunchyroll partnered with ComicBook.com to give Western audiences a preliminary look into the upcoming fourth film of the beloved sci-fi crime thriller franchise. Titled “New Threat,” the short minute-long clip prominently showcases the notorious Peacebreakers, the foreign paramilitary organization that will serve as the film’s antagonist. The video also features Milicia Stronskaya, a researcher whose work will drive the Peacebreakers and series protagonist Akane Tsunemori into conflict.
What is Psycho-Pass: Providence?
Produced by animation studio Production I.G and directed by Naoyoshi Shiotani, Psycho-Pass: Providence serves as a prequel to 2019’s Psycho-Pass 3 and centers on Akane and her team’s search for the Stronskaya Papers, a mysterious document that reportedly has the potential to destabilize Japan and the Sibyl System. Writers Makoto Fukami and Tow Ubukata, who both worked on the scripts for previous seasons of Psycho-Pass, additionally handled the screenplay for Providence.
Crunchyroll’s synopsis for the film reads, “January 2118. Chief Instructor of the Criminal Investigation Department, Akane Tsunemori, receives a report of an incident on a foreign vessel — the body of Professor Milicia Stronskaya has been discovered. Behind the incident is a group known as the Peacebreakers, a foreign paramilitary organization and a new outside threat who are targeting the professor’s research papers known as the “Stronskaya Document.” Reunited with Shinya Kogami, a former fugitive from the Criminal Investigation Department, Akane grapples with a case that quickly escalates beyond their expectations. The Stronskaya Papers could reveal a truth that would shake Japan’s government, and even the Sibyl System, to the core. It is in this untold story that the missing link is revealed.”
Production I.G’s Psycho-Pass
Written by Gen Urobochi, Psycho-Pass is set in the distant future, wherein an advanced computer network dubbed the Sibyl System has taken over the governance of much of Japan. The story follows Akane Tsunemori, a rookie Inspector for Unit One of the Public Safety Bueau’s Criminal Investigation Department. The series has established itself as one of the most popular sci-fi anime series since its premiere in 2012, with fans and critics alike praising the franchise’s animation style, masterful character development and its fascinating exploration of a dystopian sci-fi setting.
Psycho-Pass: Providence premieres in North America on July 14.
