Oshi no Ko Makes a Musical Anime Arrival
This is the second trailer that studio Doga Kobo — known for anime like Plastic Memories, My Senpai is Annoying and Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun — has provided for the upcoming series. It gives a fresh glimpse at the leading character, the plot of the first episode, and a major focus on the main idol, Ai, performing on stage. The manga is known for blending cute visuals with an incredibly dark story and subject matter, something that is hinted at but not fully shown in this new trailer.
Alongside the trailer came the reveal of a new cast member, with the announcement that Megumi Han (A Silent Voice, Hunter X Hunter) will be taking on the role of Kana Arima. She will appear alongside the previously announced cast members such as Rie Takahashi (Re: Zero, Tomo-chan Is a Girl!, Orient) as Ai Hashino, Takeo Otsuka (Shadows House, Gantz: O, Mononogatari) as Aquamarine Hoshino and Yurie Igoma in her debut role as Ruby Hashino. Daisuke Hiramaki, known for anime like Selection Project and Kuromukuro, will serve as director.
Oshi no Ko tells the story of a gynecologist named Gorou, who is obsessed with the young idol Ai Hoshino. His life is turned upside down after he is visited by the star and learns that she is pregnant. Things get even more bizarre after a deadly encounter with a stranger leaves Gorou dead, and he is reborn as the child of his beloved idol. Now, with a new name and life as Aquamarine Hoshino, he sets out to make his mother happy in the seedy and cruel Japanese music scene alongside a former patient of his who has been reborn as his twin, Ruby Hashino.
The series is written by Aka Asawawa, the creator of Kaguya-Sama: Love is War, and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari, the artist behind Scum’s Wish. The anime will premiere in April 2023, with a special advanced screening of Episode 1 taking place in Japan on March 17.
